I can play BF3 and BF4 easily getting near 200 FPS using maniacvvv's guide using a 144 Hz monitor. BF4 is probably my most demanding game. Should I get another 980 for SLI or wait for the next big thing in video boards?

Your 980 is more than enough for any game on the market. Unless you are bench marking no need to SLI.

If you have near 200 FPS in your most demanding game then SLI is definitely not for you ;) In your low graphics settings SLI can even limit performance because of CPU overhead.

You're fine for now but you can always add another later on if your needs change.

Get the SLI, only reason being, you can tell everybody, "just because".

Edit : There is no harm in maxing out your performance. And not only that, 2 980s look stunning together.

My thoughts exactly. As much as I know there is no practical need for another 980, I am worried that the GPU chip quality will drop if I wait too long. Ideally I will be able to get one later at a price in the $450 range but owning a 980 that runs with ease at an even 1500 MHz at +146 Boost, my main concern is not geting another 980 with the same OC abilities.

Well...  You COULD SLI, or you COULD add more RAM to the motherboard to max that out.  Either way, there's no real harm.

Yeah, I have money burning a hole in my pocket again. I could add another 8 GB system RAM if I upgraded from Home Premium to Professional.

The way i do it is to  SLI right  out of the box,or as fast as i can,the reason being you get two cards that are the same right down to the bios and memory vender.
Compatibility in SLI will be the best that it can be.(i know that all cards of the same spec. are SLI compatible, but it seems that slight differences rear their ugly heads ,for me at least.).
And it can get hard to find a card when you decide that you want to go SLI.(and lets say you want water blocks they can really dry up.).
If you got the cash get another 980,remember this is just my opinion.

      My specs.
    Case-Corsair 800D full tower~LG Bluray  Burner.
    Processor-Intel I7-3770K @4.2GHZ~Lighton Bluray Burner.
    Motherboard-ASUS P8z77-v Deluxe
    Memory-G.SKILL Ripjaws x 32GB. DDR3 1600 Dual Channel.
GPU-EVGA GTX-TITAN SC x2 in SLI  Water cooled EK full XXL blocks.
    Power Supply-Corsair AX1200 Gold.
1 OCZ VERTEX 4 512GB SSD Boot Drive.1 Crucial M4 128GB SSD cache for Hitachi 2TB storage drive.                             1 WD Caviar Black 1-TB. 7200RPM Hard Drive.
Intel RTS2011LC Liquid cooling Solution for cpu.
    Sound Blaster Zx soundcard.
Win.7 64BIT Professional.(Now playing with Win 8.1 to see how i like it.)

I am seeing a lot of complaints about stuttering with the GTX-980 in SLI. This is one of the things holding me back.

Maybe next month. I have a discrepancy in my checking account so I withdrew enough cash yesterday so I can get an accurate balance without writing any checks or using my debit card. Maybe it will be on sale by then. I need to get a copy of Windows 7 Professional too so I can max out my memory to 32 GB. It was down to $119 2 days ago and I missed it. I just bought a MSI Z97 PC Mate mobo with a Intel G3258 for $99 with an additional $10 rebate. That's like getting my CPU for $10!!!

OK. Halfway there now. I found a copy of Windows 7 Professional 64-bit for $79.99 at Amazon and ordered two sticks of matching RAM from NewEgg. I should be at max RAM of 32 GB by Friday. Next up is the video board. Hopefully by the second week of May. Maybe I'll get it for myself as a Mother's Day gift? LOL  No. I'm not a woman!

No stuttering here with 2 x 980SC's.   Don't let that hold you back.

I've got 2 970 FTW+s and have no stuttering as well.

As to the topic, it's all up to you.  If you are already getting more than enough frames, of course it's not "needed".  But who here gets just what they need?  I was in the same situation as you, but with 970s.  I had a single 970 and it was serving me well with plenty of frames at 1440p.  I enjoyed it so much, and just wanted more to have it, I got another.  Now my computer is blistering fast and I don't have to even worry about framerate for a while.

So the question is, do what you need, or what you want lol

OK. Stop twisting my arm already. I just sprung for one on sale for $549.99 plus a $10 rebate at NewEgg. Total cost $539.99 + free shipping + Witcher game bundle. Total expense for the day is around $800 for video board, OS and RAM. Phew! I'm bushed.

I had to get my bank to authorize payment since their "Fraud Prevention" software was suspicious. I will regret this purchase soon and begin kicking myself shortly.

None of these will support 3-way or 4-way SLI. I might as well go all out and go 4-way SLI. That way everyone will know that I'm nuts.

You mentioned that you may possibly go 4k (i thinkk you said that?). if you do, a 3rd 980 definately helps the performance in that matter. Plus eveyrone you know will be jelly as F***. i watched a few videos on youtube about 3 980s. its quite impressive

Edit : nevermind. i didnt see that you have a z97.

Sorry they couldn't be EVGA video boards but I couldn't resist the price being more than $100 less with some really cool looking heat pipes. Besides, they match my motherboard too.
