Seeing as how Stanford gives the donor no way to filter what wu's they want to specifically work on, anyone who is folding SMP will more than likely be donating to that project.

Yes, if you fold SMP at some point you'll probably complete some work units based on influenza research (though I didn't bother to confirm whether those particular projects are still active). The misinformation lies in the fact that there is a strong implication in his post that CPU folding is strictly influenza research. Though not necessarily relevant, if you tie this to his previous posts on the subject it is more than an implication. What is relevant here is Joe Q Folder comes along and reads the post, doesn't bother to check the projects list and assumes that CPU folding is only influenza research.

texinga As of this morning (and I know these things do shift a bit), but the overtake for [H] has dropped to 7.3 months. Whatever we do (assuming that we do care about being #1), we'd better start doing it soon. My hat is off to the people at [H] as well because they are cranking like a well-oiled machine and it deserves recognition. Yes, I agree. As I said, it's ironic that the Horde is gaining because of 2P+ machines, that EVGA has little to do with.

Due to the cyclical nature of bucks driven folding, you really have to look at it month vs month - i.e. how much ground did we lose over the entire month of january, february, ect. Also, when HPCS implements their upcoming changes that should give some idea of how big an impact that is having.

BTW... Just thought I would throw this out there... We are in the same position as [H] was when the GPU's got all the love. They had been mainly focused on CPU builds and we just happen to be enthusiast of the GPU world... As a result we blew by them (In general not the only reason). So as the world turns and things that go around come around... Let's just keep that in mind. The only way to compete, is to change. Period...

I do look at it on a monthly basis and much longer since I track it in my own spreadsheet every day. I can tell you that this is no anomoly or something that can be discounted by our EVGA Bucks participation. [H] is like a running rocket and has been for some time. I think AB's point above, coupled with things like HPCS are key factors. We are behind the curve with large point producing boxen and our own ability to even work Bigadv anymore. I fully expect that [H] will overtake us even if/when HP makes changes because those changes will also apply to us, OCN, etc. I also don't want anyone to think that I am particularly worried about whether we retain #1. We took it from [H] and now it is their time to do the same with us, and I've been expecting it one day.

Yup, and they slowly closed the monthly gap and have recently overtaken us and continue to gain ground. One thought I cannot ignore, though is that OCN is doing the same. They are not top-heavy laden like [H]. This leads me to believe it is something we are doing different rather than something [H] is doing different. Again, I point out that the past year we have very little increase in output. This is a break from our own team history, that other teams are not experiencing. If we want to retain the #1 spot, we have to figure out why and do something about it. If we're cool with dropping to second or third, then we can keep doing what we're doing.

Yes, I hear ya Troy and you are correct. It not only takes a significant change (or alignment) in a Team's investment in Folding products, but the other Team's own behaviors and investments affect things at the same time. That is actually happening to us from what I see in the numbers. While [H] is speeding up, we are slowing down or as you point out not growing enough. The combined results of those things has a pretty visible effect when comparing production differences. Regarding OCN, I don't have all the facts, but even on their boards they talk about doing very well with the HPCS thing. I recall reading about the possibility that some of them may have gotten more that the default resources from HPCS. Whatever it is, they are a very resourceful Team and I've been excited to see their progress too.

Man, I have a lot to catch up on - But I needed to pop in to reply to this specifically - TeamEVGA is not part of the corporate entity that is EVGA - We are a team of EVGA fans who have banded together on the EVGA forum, but that's really it. EVGA's support of our team by allowing us to use their forum and by starting the Folding Bucks promotion isn't a tacit statement of "Sure, we'll throw our resources behind you," nor should it be taken as such.

It's not over but don't get your pant in a knot over it. Like my oldest says "peace out" I like your attitude! I also like your particular way of looking at things - the part I bolded. It seems to me that folding is going through an evolution of sorts now. Each team has a heritage of different type to bring to the table, and to me it feels like we are staying most true to our heritage. Many/most EVGA folders came here through EVGA products, whether they be GPUs, overclockable single or dual-socket motherboards. Many/most of us still use those products for folding. Other teams whose names include overclocking in one way or another are evolving towards 4p systems with little or no overclocking (except for those with illegally-sold processors). If they want to buy their way into the top place, it is indeed because of us. I don't see a whole lot of fun in tweaking RAM timings by reprogramming SPDs because clocks and multipliers can't be changed. I would be interested to know if sales of GPUs are flat these last months and if that has an additional influence on the direction of our team.

We (OCN) found ways to bring a lot dedicated folders to our team with the Team Challenge(team vs team competition), Foldathons(all out folding for 2 days a month). On top of that we taken advantage of HPCS and started building 2/4p rigs too. So its a combination of a lot of diferent things we are doing to promote folding and recruit new members. Above all, we make our forum kinda fun.

It would be interesting to see if [H] has had a decrease in production in the other crunching projects in an effort to bring more resources to folding to catch us.... It doesn't help them much in the Vault, it is only worth a 0.116 increase, but it is a 1 instead of a 2....

I did some investigation [H] has nearly doubled PPD in 1 year HPCS will have 100M PPM influence in the last 2 months best PPD is 632M PPM OCN is about 100M PPM as well since HPCS 511M vs 400M (or 380M) (which we should take note of in formulating CC formula) still lookin at EVGA's peak PPD or PPM we can still beat them 660M PPM peak (OCT) and Nov (630M) without HPCS yes some are strategically helping out BOINC (Im all for it) but if push come to shove we can keep them from overtaking. if contest months have anything to do with it we will be upping our ante soon (MM and CC) should make up some ground. that means getting fired up again and doing everything to help out the team. New Recruitment, re-direction on hardware, and re-firing Team spirit (getting old members to fold again) is key. Not saying we have to move people from BOINC back to F@H rather that we need to get members that have left- got tired of it back... ie 11,000 members folding and only 1100 active? lets see if we can improve that number... infighting is probably one reason for some of the exodus - lets stop that

I am not really vocal on this issue as one of the 80% team members. but I feel same as ramcharger. any reason for more work units being completed is a good reason. if other teams have reacted to our place at the top of the list, then it just gets more work done. now we have a chance to react to them and that will get even more work done = success maybe a cure or simpler treatments for flue or cancer or altimers or whatever they are researching. any which way, if pg is using the work responsably, it is win win.

zodac Stop posting on other forums and get back to work! *whips* You're here even...nowhere is safe. Regarding OCN's PPD increase lately has been due to the growing popularity of 4P builds that [H] has so kindly influenced us with. Yes HPCS is working a lot of points for our team but that isn't the only factor. There's at least 10 of us over at OCN who have now built 2P/4P rigs and many more who have plans to build soon. The G34 builds are quite frankly the most power effective way of folding. Running about 600W of power for over 550K PPD sure beats out three of GTX580s that pump out ~60K ppd and requires the same amount of power. Folding@home may not have been originally meant for dedicated servers but they sure are nice. Whether it takes some friendly competition or a passion to fold all the proteins, the large increase in PPD for all teams is a nice thing to see. Next goal for me; catch up to awachs and get 7 mil ppd. Fold on everyone.

Looks like Team EVGA has answered the call. Our PPD is reaching levels never seen before. We're currently on pace for almost 750 mil. this month. My PPD is up(14k increase) thanks to the new GPU WUs. It won't last forever though, with the summer temps right around the corner. A lot of GPUs will be turned off, my 580s included. The other team's big bertha rigs might get the upper hand again.
