Re:All EVGA dual-socket 270-GT-W555 system builders, are invited to get specific... 2010/03/14 09:53:04 (permalink)
I will probably be getting this board this summer. My sig rig is due for a refresh.  Probably won't refresh GPU, but definitely want to refresh CPU and MoBo.

I will likely go with a pair of E5520's, but if business is going real well this summer, I may splurge a pair of X5650's.  I've already got a MM Extended Ascension and it has 3 x 360 RADs, so I'm pretty sure I'm covered on the cooling front.

My sig rig is a dual boot machine.  Currently Vista x64 (moving to Win 7 x64 when I find the time) and other work related OS's.  I need as much horsepower (as cheap as I can get it) for the work OS's, plus I also do F@H (currently running 2 i7's with Big Adv).

Main Rig: Asus X99-Deluxe | i7-5820K | SLI eVGA GTX 980 SC | CaseLabs S8
Mobile Gaming: Asus Z97i | Intel Pentium Anniversary | eVGA GTX 970 SC | Corsair 250D

Ballpark area on OC of what to expect of the Xeon 5680

http://www.bit-tech.net/hardware/cpus/2010/03/11/intel-core-i7-980x-extreme-edition-review/3

As the i7-980X proved to be such a sterling overclocker with air cooling, we decided that it would be criminal not to give it a shot with water cooling. Using a Swiftech Apogee XT waterblock and Blastflow quad 120mm radiator, we were able to push the i7-980X to 4.72GHz by using a CPU multiplier of 23x, QPI of 205MHz and a vcore of 1.45V. This is the same vcore that the i7-975 needed to hit just 4.27GHz, which is nearly half a gigahertz slower. At 4.72GHz, the i7-980X returned a ludicrously high overall score of 2,715 in our Media Benchmarks and 36,222 in Cinebench.

That might have been a single sweet sample, but.. its 32 nm.. I hope and expect it to go beyond 45nm

This model with dual qpi is branded Xeon 5680

Dave aka Movieman over at XS has a really nice SR-2 setup and will have a lot more info available after the embargo lifts tonight.

Cheers.

To be expected, but still sad no 6 core got much below 1000USD.

http://en.wikipedia.org/w..._Intel_microprocessors
(has a list that includes the multipliers and prices)
E5620's have an 18x multi-so that's 19 w/ turbo? hmm. (19x210 would do...)

if anyone is watching the thread on XS:

"app 680w at 100% load with 8 big fans and the GTX260 card "

this was measured with a Kill a Watt, also that is with both 5680's @4 GHz with temps in the mid 50's under full load.

any quality PSU preferably with a single rail over 1000W should be fine for an SLI setup, tri and quads are probably going to need 1200+ depending on the number of drives/fans etc that you are powering

Hmm I'm considering either this board and a couple 5620's or a single socket classy and a 980.

Decisions decisions..

here is what I have thrown together at this point, probably have 2 or three 480's in it eventually, but as of now it will have two 5970's tossed in there.

EVGA SR-2 BUILD

EVGA SR-2 Motherboard
Dual Socket 1366, 7 PCI-e, 48gb ram max
$599.99

OCZ Vertex SSD x2
60gb
$129.99

Duality Front Panel
NPCR Back panel
459.99
Western Digital Green x2
2tb 32mb Cache
7200 rpm
$149.99
Dtek Fuzion 1366 V2 water block x2
$85.99
Swiftech MPC 655 water pump x2
$85.99
Swiftech MCR320-qp Standard x2

small minor things are missing, (nozzels, hoses, coolant, reservoir, wire extensions...ect) some of the prices are a little off, but the jist of it is there. Perhaps time to sell my older machine...think it ought to fetch 2200 easily.

I am looking for builders input mainly

start over, delete the nf200 chips, add a second IOH chip.

nf200 is a deal breaker.

@Talonman
Nice initiative !!
Sure looking forward to see your build here (lots of pictures pls.) as i am also considering to make a build with the SR2.
But will wait and see what RAID controllers it can run with and also what garantees EVGA Europa will give if i go for full watercooling  incl. the chipset/WRM´s.

I would recommend to use one or two big radiators from the start like :
http://www.watercool.de/online-shop/ look for the MO-RA2 (pro), the shown Yateloons are very quiet for airflow they give
http://www.aquatuning.de/index.php/cat/c300_9x120mm.html

Cause using big radiators reduces the number of connects you have to make in the waterloop compared to using severel small radiators, you system will be more silent cause you will not need so much speed on the air and you could just get it build into one of the side panels of the PC enclosure so it blows air into the PC enclosure and also cools the SR-2 (depending of the PC enclosure model used).
Also the cost of one of MO-RA2 (pro) will be not that much more than a high performance 3x120/4x120 mm radiator even if you take the 9x Yateloons into the calculation.
You will need a PC enclosure with (Preferably top) blowers with enough capasity to get the air out (with the Yate loons that will be something like 58x9 CFM).
With the MO-RA2 radiator you must use a water pump with a rise height of 3 meters(yards) or more (you could put 2 in series wich gives redundance if one fails and you could run your system while waiting for a replacement of the defect pump)
And you would start out having a cooling capasity in the order of 1500-1800 watt

currently price my build 2578.92
Without cooling or PSU can't Decide what I'm going to do.
I might cut some of the build t put 1 processor for now and 1 set of 12GB of ram just to be safe.
then in the summer time I can drop in another quad core with HT.
Doesn't anyone know that If I could put 2 different types of ram with each socket.
Like I know each processor has to be in the same family

XPS 730x
I7 920 C0 3.96 stable
EVGA GTX 260 216

Hmm from my measurements this board will fit in my regular 3 year old full tower. Maybe I'm nuts though I guess we'll see soon.

X264 has a max thread  of 128, but quality decrease with threads, it's negligible under 16 threads.

I was looking at the sandwich radiator and wondering,  it appears that both radiators are being fed coolant from the same source at the same time (parallel).  Why not run them in series with the cooler that is on the output air side of the fans getting the coolant first, then run the coolant into the radiator that is getting the cooling air first, sort of a pre-cooler for the coolant and then a primary cooler.

This would obviously limit flow as the coolers are not in parallel, might need a bigger radiator.

Just a thought.

I recently bought and installed a Corsair H50 cooler for my CPU and am very impressed with it's ability to keep the CPU cool no matter what I am doing so guess eventually I will wonder into the world of wet M/B.

I find this very interesting, but due to my limited skills in computers and the fact that my wife would turn me into a Pinata hanging in the front yard, well, probably won't go there.

My Computer:

Plextor DVDR PX810SA
Cooler Master 840 case

Taloman,

Gone cruising here on forums, makes some wonderful custom Acrylic cases that probably wouldn't cost no more than a MM and He could build exactly how YOU wanted it.

Just an thought.
