An Air Algerie flight en route to Algiers from Burkina Faso with 116 people aboard -- including 50 French citizens -- disappeared from radar early Thursday over the Sahara during bad weather.

What is up with all the planes disappearing/crashing/being shot down recently?
with the technological advances (auto-pilot) pilots dont really know how to fly. They can take off, land, and set auto-pilot.

There are almost 50,000 flights a day around the world. Crashes happen all the time. When the Malaysian flight went missing and then MH17 got shot down the world news is all over any plane that goes down now. Before, the news was just mainly covering plane crashes in the US.

Well the Taiwan crash I believe happened in inclement weather so that might be a factor

Indeed, that's what I saw as well. Reportedly that's the issue here as well though.
