Hey all! Just need some advice from those more in the know than myself.. Yesterday I installed an Evga 1070 FTW to replace my 780ti.. All went well and has been running fine so far.. But today I decided to go through some of my most played games, see what new performance I'd see etc test frame rates and so on.. While running The Division on ultra (Didn't seem to strain the card any, stayed at around 85 fps.) the screen just suddenly went blank and I heard the alert sound that usually signifies something being unplugged or such.. Tried unplugging display port cable first to see if that was the issue, nothing. Tried a restart, nothing. So I then pulled my PC out from next to the desk so I could peek in the side window of my case and all the LEDs had gone off on the Gcard itself.. I pulled the case up onto my desk and unplugged everything, made sure the gcard was still seated properly and that the pcie 8 pins hadn't come loose or anything. All seemed okay, so I just plugged power back in and turned the pc on, card LEDs started up again so I plugged everything back in and logged windows back in and it seems to have been okay so far (Not thrown any games at it just to be on the safe side.) Anyone encountered similar or know what could of caused this?

Usual rundown:
Windows 10 professional
Intel Core i7 4790k
16gb Corsair Dominator 1600mhz ddr3.
Asus Maximus VII Hero mother board
Corsair AX860i PSU

Hmmm.  Maybe a loose power connection?  After you checked things over, you fixed it without knowing?  Hard to pinpoint with just a single incident.  See what happens now after a few days.

I would also check to make sure the card is properly seated....remove it, put it back in..make sure the clip that helps hold it in place
is actually clipped onto the card.

could have been that the system shut down as it was overheating?

what I suggest you do is to have a CPU and GPU temperature monitors running in the background. then try the 3Dmarks firestrike benchmark running. if that causes the same issue, maybe you got a temperature issue. or run the division again and monitor the temps, for the card, you should see 65 C (I have the same card) less if its not stretch. for the CPU, 50 / 60C would be fine. if the temps go above that, then you might want to add some more fans to your case.

so checking the temps would be my next port of call, once you reseated the card.

Welcome to the forums Nyxzy

Power interruption - at the wall outlet ?

Do you use a UPS to provide clean continuous power to your PC?

See if it repeats - test it again

I've seen failing PSU power off suddenly under load, (fix a PC with one just the other day)

Make sure GPU is not sagging, when mounted.

(always remove power cord <wait for capacitors to power down> -when removing, replacing anything from MB.  There is still power to the MB - even when the PC is "off")

Some good things to monitor and watch out for mentioned above just in case it wasn't a fluke...

Also confirm the modular PSU power cables are in fact fully seated at both ends.

If the PCI power cables are 8-pin on one end and 6-pin + 2-pin on the other the 8-pin end goes into the PSU

Re: Advice required please! 2016/07/28 07:49:32 (permalink)
Firstly, Many thanks to all of you for taking the time to respond, it is much appreciated :D Will go through from the top:

bdary: Check those when I opened it, everything seemed to be in solidly!

transdogmifier: When I opened it I gave it a firm push into the pcie socket. Don't think I could get it in there any tighter. Clip was certainly on.

matthewfarmery: I have a Cooler Master Nepton 280 on my CPU, Idles about 40C normally hits just over 50 when I'm gaming. The card did seem fairly warm when I opened the case to check it.. On my old 780ti, temps normally hit about 80C when playing Overwatch. Will have to find a way to monitor temps when in game, tis built in on Overwatch but not all games have it like that. Will say when I got back to desktop after the issue, I did set up my fan curve to be a bit more aggressive. Partly, issue could be that my room does get rather hot in summer.. Current cooling set up for the PC is 140mm Intake on front, 2x 140mm in the top (Attached to nepton rad) and another 140mm at the rear as exhaust. (Cooler Master Cosmos mid tower)

Cool GTX: Thanks buddy! I'd ASSUME not, nothing else flickered or lost power. PC stayed on, speakers didn't hiccup at all. Not sure if any of that would mean otherwise? I do not use a UPS, I do have it plugged into a rather nice surge protector but that's it. The card doesn't seem to be sagging to an amount I'd consider a problem? If I push a finger against the underside of the card, I can push it upwards maybe 2mm? if that? It doesn't seem to have any real give. And yeah, when I opened it up to install the 1070 I gave everything a once over to make sure everything was happy :)

One thing I can add to it, I did play The Division on high last night for about 2 or so hours, didn't have an issue. Though at the time of the issue I was trying it on Ultra? Will maybe risk poking at The Division on ultra again.. see if the problem happens again. Any good recommendations for a program to monitor temps while I'm in game?

Again, thanks for all the input so far all, it's much appreciated!

Ran around on The Division on ultra again.. no crash yet.. took above screen after about 10 minutes of running about. Anyone see anything that isn't how it should be?

I agree with everyone that has participated in this thread. Reseating the card is probably the best known cure. Make sure your power supply voltages are fine.

Just realised, EVGA PrecisionX OC can monitor CPU and GPU temps using the OSD,

in the dropdown selector, you can add a few choices, just make sure that OSD is white, then click on OSD settings

you can also log the results to file, worth a go, and see what temps,  you are getting.

edit
not 100% sure on all the options, but set whatever you have selected in the dropdown, and click on GPU1, then run the game, and you should see the info in the top left corner.

#1 Check gpu temps while playing.

#2 Check psu voltages while the psu is under load.

PSU Testinghttp://www.jonnyguru.com/...;ndfaq_id=28 (You will need a Digital Multimeter for testing your PSU. You want all three rails to be within ATX spec, ATX Specification: 12V: 11.40 to 12.60,  5V: 4.75 to 5.25,  3V: 3.135 to 3.465. If any of your rails hit the minimum spec I would replace the PSU with a new one.)

HOW TO: Properly load your system when checking PSU voltages.
#1 Download & Install Prime95
#2 Download & Install Unigine Heaven 4.0.
#3 Open both Prime95 & Heaven 4.0 Run Small FFT test for Prime95. Run Heaven 4.0 @ max settings. Run both of these tests at the same time while checking voltages.

May we assume that you removed the old drivers and did a fresh install of nVidia's newer drivers?

rjohnson11: Yeah after reading most of these I pulled the pc back up onto my desk and reseated both the card itself and the 8 pins plugged into it just to be sure.

Sajin: I don't have a digital multimeter so that'll have to be a last ditch thing as I can't do it right now. Thanks for the advice though!

Heini2: You may indeed assume that :D

Once again, many thanks to you all for your responses! Pleased to say that so far, not had any further issue.. So just gonna play it by ear and see what unfolds in due course :)

i use CPUID as one of the programs to monitor all of my system's components. i also have Afterburner running at start up and the temps, volts, usage, and clocks are reading very consistently with each other.
