Well I got my rig watercooled today, and wanna OC my i7-960 to atleast 3.5, hopefully around 4.0. It idles at 30c, and loads at 52c. So I will show my work progress here.

Just OC'd to 4Ghz, with no probs! Put the voltage at 1.32, and got a 4.08Ghz (Stable) OC. Idle is @ 41c. Load is @ 59c.

How is that? Is the load temp fine? I will try to reach atleast 4.2Ghz (Hopefully 4.5Ghz stable) tomorrow.

Also is 166x24 okay? I don't know tons about OC'ing, but just went with it, and so far, it's really stable.

Thanks for looking!

Here's my 3DMark11 results. I ran performance, at default.

My score: P8761

Max temp during 3DMark11: 61c

Now if everyone thinks my ratio is fine, I will OC my GPU's slightly tomorrow.

What did you use to stress test the CPU? Also 3D Mark 11 is not very good for testing the CPU OC IMO. I prefer 3D Mark Vantage for that. Ratio is fine, you can use whatever you like to get what you want.

Good job for your first OC. Awesome! i have my 960 at 3.8 stable, air cooled. My temps are 47c-50c. I will push it to the limit later but no need right now.

JMHO.....Use the Intel Burn Test (latest version of course) to stress test your CPU OC's......not 3Dmark....either one of them.

Nice Elite, grats!!!

I concur with Jeffrey, IBT (Intel Burn Test) all the way for CPU stressing/testing.

Alright I ran IBT at 5 passes, with the normal setting. And got right at this all 5 times:

Time (s)           Speed (GFlops)           Result
17.715             50.4585                     3.313965e-002

Is that any good?

If it doesn't fail then it should be fine.  5 passes is nothing to actually measure stability though, I go for 30 and then do Prime95.  But if you haven't found your max overclock, just 20 is fine until you're satisfied with your overclock.

Alright cool thanks, I'll prolly stay at 4.0 (No more than 4.2). So I will give 30 a shot, and run Prime95 again but it did great on that earlier.

You should be able to get higher than 4 GHz without much trouble.  No guarantees but lots of people do and it's worth a shot.  Keep the base clock at or below 200 MHz though so you don't run into headaches.

Alright, so keep the base under 200, and does the multiplier matter? Dont wanna screw anything up. Also I see when I OC'd to 4.0, now my RAM is at like 1566. It was at 1066 when I was stock. What is that?

Because my RAM is 1600 stock... And I have XMP enabled. Or is that something totally different?

XMP profile might switch on 2:8 divider (133 x 8 = 1064 MHz).  I never use them.  You should keep the 2:8 divider though, this way you'll be at or below 1600 MHz so your RAM won't have stability issues.  As for the CPU multiplier, it matters since 24x will give you 4.8 GHz with a 200 MHz CPU host frequency.  Good luck with that.

Ahh so no more than 200, and 24x. And how do I disable my RAM to auto OC? Because once I OC my CPU, the RAM also jumps up.

And since my ram was at 1066, when my cpu was at stock. That means my RAM wasnt even running at 1600? I thought it was always suppose to run at 1600...

Re:About To Attempt Some OC'ing 2011/09/29 22:15:15 (permalink) ☄ Helpful
Your memory and CPU host frequency are linked.  A setting called DRAM Frequency (or similar) is the ratio at which the two are linked.  By default it was 2:8 - 133 MHz CPU host frequency x 8 = 1064 MHz.  If you wanted 1600 with a stock CPU clock you'd need a 2:12 (133 x 12 = 1596 Mhz).

Keep them linked for stability reasons.  Your XMP profile is probably ideal, it seems that it was 2:8 before.  If you keep to 200 MHz and below CPU host frequency, with a 2:8 divider, then your RAM will never exceed 1600 MHz, so it shouldn't cause any instability.

Alright, thanks man. Sorry for the noobness. So say for instance, like right now I'm OC'd at 4.08, and the RAM is at like 1544, should I make the divider different to get nearly the full 1600 outta my RAM, or is that dumb? So you mean to keep the divider at 2:8 at all times?

2:8 is best for you, since you're going for ~4 GHz with 1600 MHz RAM.  Your next option is 2:10 which will make your RAM run at 1930 MHz, which will more than likely be unstable.

Re:About To Attempt Some OC'ing 2011/09/29 22:21:46 (permalink)
Ahh gotcha. I'll make sure to keep it at 2:8. I should be able to find out how to make it stay.

Also just curious, but how is the ratio 2:8, if it's 133x12 for instance? Wouldnt that be 1:12? Just curious

Well Im about to set that at 2:8 if it moved, and HOPEFULLY hit 4.2 stable. Then I will be done. And I guess I can keep lowering my voltages until it becomes unstable? I just dont want too much volts for no reason, and just to cause heat/stress. Right now it's at 1.33 for the 4.0 OC. I just guessed and went with 1.33.

Re:About To Attempt Some OC'ing 2011/09/29 22:57:52 (permalink)
Well I attempted for a 4.2GHz OC, it shows 4.218 in the bios. But for some reason, shows 4.199 in CPU-Z, and Core Temp. Which is still RIGHT AT 4.2GHz.

Anyways, I got the BSOD on Windows boot with 1.33V, so I went to 1.36V, and now VERY stable. Ran Prime95, 20 passes with IBT, and ran 3DMark11, about to run Vantage when it finishes downloading

Here's a screen shot.

Here's my 3DMark11 bench with the 4.2OC

The temp in the screen shot shows like 74c on some of the cores, but I don't believe that, because 99% of the time, it'd be like 69c, and then instantly jump to 74c, and back down to 69c. So I guess it's just acting weird. Also on 3DMark11, the load was 66c, which I think is great.

When you ran IBT did you have it set to use all your Memory? I honestly hate the UI for IBT. The UI on LinX is way better. You can get a link to the most recent version in the 4.2GHz Club thread in the X58 section. When you use it you want to click on the All button. Also to get it to show the speed at what you want you need to make it 176. It's because of a thing called clock drift.
