I know I have been quiet for a few months, but this is the project that I have been working on amongst other things. This has been the most complicated block I have ever made.  I hope you guys have broadband connections, cause there are quite a few pictures here.

I will spare my usual banter and just get right down to the pictures:

The motherboard in CAD:

Now comes the block itself in CAD:

The CAD block installed on the CAD board:

*no thermal tape was harmed during this installation ;)

Measuring each chips height:

The paper prototype:

The VR block:

The plastic prototype started:

Moving on to Aluminum:

CAD of the beveled top:

This was done in order to populate all the slots of the board.

Plastic prototype of the top as well:

On to an actual production block:

Starting the actual top:

The jig I had to made to present a flat surface to drill the holes in the top:

A BOATLOAD of white delrin shavings:

This is the completed jig:

The angle of the picture is deceiving, because the nozzles are vertical, but you get the idea why I needed the jig.  I only have a 3 axis CNC.

Now to the VR block...
Aluminum prototype:

Now a copper one:

Still working on the Copper VR blocks, but thats where I am right now.  I have all the VR blocks to make now.  Then the tops.
Hopefully I didn't fry anyone's 14.4 modem.

That's amazing Nate, awesome work, as always.  Now the real question is, if we get the block, does it come with the M&M's?  :p

Once it si all done, do you have the 2011 parts to test it, I would love to see what temps the VRM holds when clocked.

Either way, its awesome, looking forward to seeing it complete and running!

They take a long time to make.  Multiple operations are involved.  No news as of yet since they are made to order.  I am trying to set more time aside to make them.

Dave, I don't have any other hardware for it since its not my board.  I can say anything is better then the stock option.

No M&M's for you ;)

Hey, I havent really used the evga forum before so I am not sure if this is common or not. Did you take orders and are now producing these blocks to fill said orders? Will it be possible to purchase a vrm and chipset block In the future. I was waiting for an ek block to be finished but now I see that they are producing them for the x77 board and not the x79.

Been watching your stuff since the SR-2, and always amazed.   Used to run a CNC at the place I worked, so I know the PITA it can be to do all this - especially on a homemade machine.  Pure awesome.

Only thing I would love to see, is EVGA do a take on this Mobo on an HPTX form factor.  Instead of a second CPU, perhaps to outdo it, on board sound equal to an HT-Omega? ;)

hey!  sorry i didn't reply to anyone, I didn't get notified for some reason.

An absolutly perfect fit of the CPU holes:

Installation will require springs or some type of spacer in conjunction with the CPU waterblocks.  Creativity will be the key.

And here is the O-ring installed and sandblasted:

To answer your question, yes.  But this blocks take me a LONG time.  As long as your not in any rush.

Kind of wonder that, now you have made something for the motherboard, if company like EK and Watercool are going to make something. Because, you know, that is something that big company's do. Steal ideas. Great work though, looks like the most complicated block you have made to date.

Re:ASRock X79 Extreme 11 Waterblock (TONS of PICS) 2013/02/21 17:56:04 (permalink)
It is THE most complicated.  It is soooo many processess switching bits, and rotating and such.  There is this process called "lean 6 sigma" where you try and streamline processes, but this is not the case.

Going from 3/8 end mills, to 1/4, 1/16, profiling, extruding, drilling (3 different bits there) and doing all kinds of stuff.  I will be happy to be done with this batch.  Much smaller batches next time.  Bit off WAY more then I could chew.  Took a few weeks to design and prototype this alone.

& lol @ milord :P

email nateman and say you would like to order one. Simple as that. You have to be specific though as to which block you want, he has done about 8+ blocks. All which are listed in his signature. Last I knew he will make the top of the blocks out of anything. It all comes down to how much he sells them for and the cost of materials.
