So my hard drives in my x58 system died about a month ago.  I was thinking of just getting some new ssd's for it and a 980 to replace my 580. Will my x58 give me full advantage of the 980's power or will my x58 system slow it down. I also was thinking of building a new system like a z97 or even a x99 sytem since my x58 is showing its age. I use this pc for gaming and love all the eye candy but I'm also only using a 1080p monitor. At some point I would like to get a 4k monitor . Any thoughts ?

your I7 950 will be fine with the 980! CPU's haven't really leaped that much performance in terms of noticeable gameplay(especially at HQ settings) since the original I7's came out. I am assuming your i7 950 is overclocked so that only helps improve your situation. The leap from the 580 to a 980 will be night and day transition.

My old system is my HTPC and it is a 950 oc'd to 3.8 and previously had 2xGTX 460s. Way too much noise for an HTPC so when I built my new PC early this month, I went ahead and splurged for an additional 970 to swap into it as well.  It screams.

I would personaly try to get your grubbies on an I7 970/980/980x or even better a cheap 990x... if you want to stick with the x58. Its funny the old six cores still can hold the pace even today.

Coming from someone with an X58 and a pair of 980's, you will see some bottlenecking with that setup.  I have my 920 up to 4.4ghz, and there's still bottlenecking present.  It's possible that there may be a difference with the six-core varieties of the the socket 1366 processors, but there will be some bit of a slowdown with a four-core.  Now, regardless of the bottlenecking, there's still a vast and noticeable improvement over the 580's, so any amount of bottlenecking shouldn't put you off from upgrading.

single 980 should be fine you could also get x5670 xeon and overclock to 4.2.

not the best run was not reading boost clock http://www.3dmark.com/fs/3552733  but i have seen scores of 12000 on 5930k w/single 980.

Thanks for the info guys. I'm think as long as I'm in a spending mood might as well build a new rig for the 980's

My i7 920 bottlenecked my GTX 970. I built a new rig with Z97 and i5 4690K, its much quicker.

    I'm going with a new Z97 rig also. Will be using a i7 4970 . I think I'll be happy
