I just received an MSI GTX 1070 Gaming X and have been comparing it to my EVGA GTX 980 Ti Hybrid. I have to say, nearly all of the reviews I have read for the 1070 are extremely exaggerating or just flat out lying. I've run many benchmarks.. Firestrike, Valley, GTAV, Tomb Raider, Shadow of Mordor and The Division. The 1070 @ 2100MHz is around 10-15FPS slower in all of these games. And Nvidia want to claim it's faster than a Titan X? C'moooooon.

I was pretty sure this would be the outcome. I'm just disappointed that Nvidia and a lot of major review sites lied or exaggerated.

I'll post up my results in the morning.

I've seen review after review showing that the 980 Ti stock and 1070 stock are fairly evenly matched in every test.

Overclocked the 980 Ti wins out, yet no review site that I've seen yet shows a 980 Ti OC vs 1070 OC - just the 1070 OC vs stock 900 cards.

Here is a really good stock to OC comparison for the new cards to the old cards.

It's because you don't have the high bandwidth bridge. You have to have it even with 1 card, or you don't get all the super fast bandwidths. True rookie mistake not to order one.

See, EVGA even shows how it is supposed to be used:

I really hope people understand, without the need of annotations, that the SLI bridge wouldn't be doing anything other than providing another led lit EVGA logo on a single card. *fingers crossed for humanity*

over all... the 1070 has 3.7fps more? That's nothing really to write home about. It might be due to the fact that the 980TI has a wider bus and the 1070 only has a 256bus. That can make a whole lot of difference for performance. I would be hesitant to choose between a 980TI vs a 1070.

I believe you, I would never bought GTX1070 when GTX980Ti Classified is available for 550euro or similar price in dollars.
I doubt now that even GTX1080 is so much stronger than TITAN X as NVIDIA want to present.
Maybe people who replace TITAN X with GTX1080 could give us better information, but I doubt they notice any difference.

I don't personally like benches based on the GPU being overclocked. It skews the baseline. Stock clocks to stock clocks is valid for making apples to apples comparisons.

See, there are multiple reviews from credible sources claiming the 1070 to be "overall" faster, but this is not what I'm seeing. Once I get time tomorrow afternoon, I'll post up pics of all my benchmarks results.

For now, take a look at the GPU scores in Firestrike. This is with the exact same PC configuration.. same CPU speed, SSD, OS, etc. Both cards are OC'ed to their max.

I'll do stock clock benches tomorrow as well. Though, we know these new cards all pretty much max out at 2100-2150 MHz. And the 980 Tis were around 1450-1500MHz.

Any user who has the 980ti should not get the GTX 1070. It's a waste and you wouldnt really notice (until maybe dx12) youd wanna make leap to gtx1080

+1. An upgrade to a GTX 1080 is the proper upgrade from a GTX 980ti. A GTX 1070 would be a good upgrade for a GTX 980 or GTX 970.

This forum is full of posts of people saying there's no significant reason to upgrade a 980ti to either a 1070 or 1080 unless you just want to have the latest card available.

I'm not debating that. I'm just annoyed at the mass misinformation Nvidia are spreading about it being quicker than a Titan X. And, unfortunately, there are some people falling for it and upgrading from a 980 Ti to a 1070.

^It's no misinformation. Reference vs refere..Founders the TitanX is slower than a 1070 granded in the single digits % (Nvidia never said it will blow the doors of an Titanx). We're talking about stock clocks. You will never see Nvidia (or any other manufacturer for that matter) compare oced cards of the old gen to new cards, be it reference or AIB parters.

About people "upgrading" from a 980Ti to a 1070. Kudos to them, they have the money to learn valuable lessons the hard way.

I'm not debating that. I'm just annoyed at the mass misinformation Nvidia are spreading about it being quicker than a Titan X. And, unfortunately, there are some people falling for it and upgrading from a 980 Ti to a 1070.

Every bench I've seen making a one to one comparison has the 1070 being marginally a better performer over the 980Ti and TITAN X. It is what it is. On the other hand, the difference is usually only a few FPS so as an 'upgrade', it wouldn't make sense to me.

Looks like the 1070 comes out ahead slightly at higher reaolutions where the extra RAM might be helping. The new cards seem to be much better on newer games on current Direct.
I picked up the 1080 FTW to replace my 970 SC. I always figured the 1070 should be a good upgrade for 700 series cards, I don't generally upgrade on a single generation. But that 1080 performance looked too good and too power efficient to pass up.

I guess I got a lazy 1070, possibly. It just couldn't keep up against my particular 980 Ti hybrid even with both just set to auto in Afterburner. At least it sold quickly on Craigslist, lol.

Also, with Tom's reviews, if you look at the actual 980 Ti ref review.. You'll see conflicting numbers with what they put in the 1070 review. Interestingly, they don't list the settings used for a lot of the games in the 980 Ti review, but they do in the 1070 review, so it's still hard to call them completely out on that.

I compared many reviews of various models of 1070 and 980 Ti.

The reviews show very similar FPS but the 1070 is just slightly better and don't forgot that the card will became better drivers; the power consumption is also better. So I sold my classified for 530€ and I will buy a 1070 for 500€.

Wrong. GP100/GP102 would be a proper upgrade from 980 ti.
