Hi all,

Recently upgraded from 2 way 780ti SLI to 2 way 980ti SLI (06G-P4-4996-KR) and, on my old setup, I use to see the bios on cold boot without any issue over displayport to an LG34UM95-P monitor.

The new 980ti gpu in sli don't show bios on cold boot, but will do on a restart ?

If it helps I'm running windows 10 on an i7 2600k (GAZ68X-UD7-B3 motherboard (yes I know that's my next upgrade)) and whilst its not an issue, and the system works fine and the benchmarks are a big improvement over my older 780ti, I'm just puzzled as to why I'm not seeing BIOS on cold boot.

Thanks

You have 1 monitor, or more than 1?

I ask because if you have the DVI or HDMI port plugged in, that takes precedence over DP.

Also, I sometimes don't see any output until windows on my TV via a HDMI cable - turning off the monitor and turning it on fixes that issue until the next time it crops up.

    Hey thanks for the reply.

No its just the 1 monitor connected via DP. On my old 780ti sli it didn't matter which port I used on the gpu. I cant use hdmi on the 980ti sli because the monitor cant do the correct refresh rate over hdmi, so ive not yet checked if hdmi does indeed show bios from a cold boot. Ive not changed any bios settings since swapping the cards either. Its not stopping me using the pc and the cards work fine, just odd that DP isn't showing BIOS from cold boot.

Does turning the monitor off then on during boot allows the POST messages to be seen?

Make sure your monitor is connected to the top card (closest to cpu socket) and not the bottom one.

    Hi all,

Yes it is connected to the top gpu in the display port nearest the right hand side of the case. So if you imagine looking at the end of the evga 980 ti ftw with the backplate facing up and the pci connectors on the left of the card, its in the far left DP.

Hmm come to mention it could I have the wrong DP? my old 780ti only had the 1 DP but just noticed this new card has 3 ?

Also don't know if it makes a difference but im using an EVGA LED sli bridge. I will try the suggestion re the monitor on / off. Thanks :)

Still not managed to check, but im wondering if this is BIOS related as checking around it appears this was an issue on the 980s as well ?

How can I check / confirm that my cards are running the latest bios ?

    Thanks

    Welcome to the Forums AHarMan!

There was a BIOS fix for certain 980 Ti models but the 4996 FTW was not one of them. You should definitely read this FAQ to see if any of those options may resolve the problems you are having.

There appears to be a handshake issue with certain monitors over DisplayPort. Sometimes the monitor manufacturer has a firmware update that can help too. You may want to contact LG and see if they have an update available.

    Hi Joseph and thank you.

For all purposes its just odd that my evga 780ti didn't have any issue and the 980ti does from cold boot. I can still get into windows so its not ciritical problem, im just concerned if I ever had to reinstall windows would it stop me from doing so not being able to see bios.

Thanks anyway, will try and follow that up.

It is a bit of a mystery because both the 780 Ti and 980 Ti have DP 1.2 but there seems to be other factors involved. The symptoms and solutions seem to point to a handshake timing issue. It appears that the handshake is not completed in a short enough time so the monitor abandons the connection thinking that there is no cable connected.

This only happens with certain monitor/GPU combinations so its not a hardware issue per se. It is related to the firmware timing settings in all likelihood. Like I mentioned, sometimes the monitor manufacturer has a fix if it is a known problem. We have also put in a lot of time trying to come up with a universal fix but some monitors do not appear to play well with our solution. The card you have already has the DP corrected firmware applied.
