Just noticed this on the store front of overclockers.co.uk, Biggest online retailer in the UK -

"OCUK"980 Reference is end of life!

Surely this can't be correct, The reference models with the glowing lettering are Nvidias signature.

OCUK aren't known to be wrong on these matters, They are owned by the German company caseking.de, Biggest in europe when it comes to enthusiast parts.

There was a design floating around that Nvidia were going to implement a new kind of turbine into their coolers so maybe a new reference style cooler.

What I'm getting at is maybe they were given wrong info by Nvidia because I can't see the reference style cooler being EOL only mere weeks after it's release.

Why that? NVIDIA turbine is excellent.
I don't know how is possible better than this.
Special now with GTX980 SuperClocked people she is even more silent because cards are colder few degrees than Titan Black and GTX780Ti.
    AMD could dream this.

I agree, I would felt bad to install new card in such mess inside.
But turbine is so good and can be used on 90-100% speed if need.
It's more silent than my K|NGP|N on 80%.

Apparently it was not a mistake, Just got this info from OCUK -

Asus = nearly out on reference and focusing on Strix
EVGA = reference production stopped! full focus on ACX 2.0
Galax = unknown but moving production over to SOC and HOF, but might continue reference on special request.
Gigabyte = ok but moving production to only WindForce and G1 end of this month
Inno3D = Best supply but now moving over to X3 and X4 Herculez coolers.
MSI = no reference left! full focus on gamer models only
    Palit = Jetstream only!
Zotac = all gone and moving over to three fan OC model.

Overclockers.co.uk as well as being owned by the biggest online enthusiast retailer in europe *CaseKing* is in direct contact with all the major vendors EVGA being one of them, This info is directly from the head marketing guy so unless you know something the head marketing guy doesn't know, This is the state of things to come, Most likely due to a new reference design which is in the works.

Well looking at it logically it makes sense...

There was a design let out by a partner of Nvidia a few months ago that showed a new turbine fan design for reference cards which would mean they would need to redesign the rest of the housing to accommodate it...

And possibly modify the housing to fit on a slightly smaller 900 series card that's in high demand for that cooler? Wink wink, nudge nudge.

Most smart people wait EVGA GTX980 Classified, Triple BIOS Security and 8+8 pin, EVBot Connector on place,
probably some nice VDDC Controller for more freedom.
She will beat GTX780Ti Classified for 2000 Firestrike.

With all the options for afforable quiet performance fans I don't think an ACX would at all cause problematic ambient temps. I know mine doesn't and it's running 84 Mhz over stock superclock.

I talk about out of box performance and I didn't saw reference GTX980 with 13.300-13.400 in Firestrike as Classified KP GTX780Ti.
I saw 980 SC model about 13.000 but Classified will bring maybe even 1000 points more, stronger VRM and that Maxwell chip can show OC capability.
Everybody say he OC well. I thought about Performance Firestrike.
What I saw over net speed of cards are
GTX780Ti reference > Titan Black > GTX980/GTX780Ti Classified (depend of sample) > GTX980 SC/GTX780Ti KP Classified (depend of sample).
But I'm not completely sure but I think few results here with KP Classified had better result than some GTX980 SC model even.
We talk about some 200-300 points and 50-80 in Extreme. Compared and with reviews and with Unigine Heaven 4.0 about 50-60 points is stronger KP Edition.
GTX980 Classified will beat everything out of box completely no matter on how good sample and driver and in every benchmark.

Newegg took off the listing for eVGA GTX 980s so it is very possible the reference cooler is discontinued.

Yeah but that's with your big Storm Stryker. I have this little Sugo SG-10 so blower style will be better in this case. That and I think the reference cooler looks and feels more like a premium product than the ACX

+1 -  I really like the looks of the 'TITAN' style reference coolers plus the air exhaust feature

Someone official should chime in on this. If those reference cards are dc'd already lol, what are the people in the step-up waiting on them going to do? I was told that if I change my step-up option to the acx 2.0 card, I'd be placed in the back of the line. That's HORRIBLE considering I signed up shortly after the step-up went live :(

EDIT: Ok, so I just called to try and clear this up. I was told that production has been stopped on the reference 980s. The CSR on the phone told me that if you signed up for a reference 980 in the step-up, that is what you would be receiving (I'd assume when their alloted amounts were gone through during sign up, they'd have taken it off automatically or switched it over to the ACX cards as they had done a few days after step-up went live.) My fear was that, if the production has halted, I may end up in a never-ending limbo if they didn't receive any more reference cards for me to actually step-up to (aka, my step-up line doesn't move because no more cards are received to actually move the queue along, meanwhile those that signed up later for the ACX cards continue to move as those cards are still being produced) >.< Also, if you change your step-up to the ACX 2.0 cards, you will be moved to the back of the step-up line.

However, as I'm unfamiliar with how their allotment works, I'm just hazy. I guess I'll sit back and hope that I receive one eventually lol.

Are they trying to kill off SLI? Because those ACX style cards are horrible for SLI, they dump all the hot air into the case.

That is not a problem for anyone with a case that has even remotely decent airflow.
