Dear MaelstromOC, I cannot comment on this thread as I do not have any information to offer, but I can confirm that if you did request a GTX 980 Step-up that we will move the queue forward as the product requested does become available. Please understand that no one in CS would be able to confirm if production was stopped on a item so I am not certain where this misinformation came from, but I do apologize for any confusion as this is simply not a true statement. If someone does prefer the ACX 2.0 model of the GTX 980 that we currently offer for Step-up then you are welcome to move to this model by either cancelling your current request and resubmitting it or by contacting EVGA Customer Support at Support@evga.com or by phone at 1-888-881-3842 option 1. MaelstromOC Someone official should chime in on this. If those reference cards are dc'd already lol, what are the people in the step-up waiting on them going to do? I was told that if I change my step-up option to the acx 2.0 card, I'd be placed in the back of the line. That's HORRIBLE considering I signed up shortly after the step-up went live :( EDIT: Ok, so I just called to try and clear this up. I was told that production has been stopped on the reference 980s. The CSR on the phone told me that if you signed up for a reference 980 in the step-up, that is what you would be receiving (I'd assume when their alloted amounts were gone through during sign up, they'd have taken it off automatically or switched it over to the ACX cards as they had done a few days after step-up went live.) My fear was that, if the production has halted, I may end up in a never-ending limbo if they didn't receive any more reference cards for me to actually step-up to (aka, my step-up line doesn't move because no more cards are received to actually move the queue along, meanwhile those that signed up later for the ACX cards continue to move as those cards are still being produced) >.< Also, if you change your step-up to the ACX 2.0 cards, you will be moved to the back of the step-up line. However, as I'm unfamiliar with how their allotment works, I'm just hazy. I guess I'll sit back and hope that I receive one eventually lol.

The confusion for me lies in whether or not there are FAR more ACX 2.0 cards being manufactured than there are the reference models. I know 980 production as a whole isn't being halted, but the issue at hand was if the reference card coolers were stopped or even severely slowed down to help cope with the demand of the ACX 2.0 cards. I know they're identical aside from the coolers that are on them, but I'd find it pretty crappy if the people that signed up first ended up having to wait months simply because the reference cards offered on day one were not as readily available as the others, hence people signing up later moving right along. Surely that is understandable. If there will still be the same volume of reference cards available as before, then there would be no problem at all.

chrisdglong Are they trying to kill off SLI? Because those ACX style cards are horrible for SLI, they dump all the hot air into the case.

MaelstromOC That is not a problem for anyone with a case that has even remotely decent airflow.
Yep, running SLI stacked ACX, 3-way ACX & 4-way ACX is not a problem with a case that has 9 to 11 Delta AFB1212GHE-CF00 case fans attached to it.

This is from the main buyer at OCUK, Again the biggest re/e-tailer within europe - Gibbo We are pushing EVGA, but it is looking grim right now. We've spoke with every board partner, they have all now EOL'd reference cooler. Only one board partner was willing to continue them if we ordered 3000 units, which is something we cannot do. So unless I can sort something the reference card is now EOL and will probably be no longer available anywhere come November.

Nereus and this is from the horse's mouth, not some retailer who has no control over EVGA:
It's not just about EVGA though, It's about vendors in general, If the reference cooler stops being made by the board partners which OCUK state they have been told and only EVGA makes it you can guarantee prices are gonna go up for the luxury of being one of the only blower style rear exhaust coolers on the market especially considering mini builds are getting more and more popular and rear exhaust cards are the favored flavor in those scenarios.

I really don't understand why they'd stop making them.. there is no reason to that anyone is aware of, and certainly no good business decision to stop making them, considering the demand. Perhaps someone at OCUK is stretching the truth out of frustration of not being able to obtain the product. I certainly would believe EVGA over OCUK regarding what EVGA are doing (or not doing, in this case). If EVGA says it is a false claim, then I tend to believe that the claim is false for other vendors too (MSI etc). I can't discount the possibility that supply is restricted in order to boost ACX sales, but then again, the ACX models are also out of stock, so really there's not much solidity even in that. My view: demand has far outstripped supply. Eventually supply will catch up, but it may take a while.

Sounds reassuring, but the "not exactly" makes me think that there is something else going on here, besides supply and demand. Maybe NVIDIA is having production problems?, the supply of the GTX 900 series currently reminds me of how it was for the GTX 480/470 for the first few months... "not exactly" ??? What the heck is that supposed to mean? Either it is or it isn't. So now we have two EVGA staff that may or may not be contradicting each other. We know there is limited availability right now, but is the reference cooler going to be continued, or is it finished, or is it being replaced by a different non-ACX cooler?
