So I see a few sites talking about an 8GB variant of the gtx 980 coming this November. Do you think for 1440p (sli gtx 980s 4gb) will be good enough, and will I even see much difference  if i was to use 2 8GB GTX 980s instead? Another important question : Will Evga give us the option to step up from our 4GB gtx 980 to the 8GB version?

4Gb is plenty for 1440p, its 4Gb at 4K that i'm concerned about. Bf4 currently uses 3.5-3.8 or more depending on the map. Along with games like watchdogs or a heavily modded skyrim, eats up that 4Gb pretty quickly. This was my only concern when stepped up from my 6GB 780s.

Yeah... I'm running three ASUS PG278Q 144Hz 2560x1440 monitors. I tried BF4 using Surround mode on Ultra Settings. It works well enough, but for truly optimal performance using a Triple Monitor Surround set-up at full resolution with Ultra Graphics you'll need 6-8GB of VRAM. Additionally, manufacturers are gearing up for 4k gaming and 6-8GB will be standard when this happens.

For now 4GB is plenty good, even for triple 1440p monitors :)

I tested 1 gtx 970 4gb and it seems good for 1440p. Using 1 card playing BF4 on ultra with 4xmsaa im only using 2.8-3gb of vram, I get 45-80fps, though extremely overclocked to 1537core @ 1.243vcore. Can get higher OC running single than SLI (gets very hot on air with normal clocks).

4gb is fine for gaming. More vram would be better for editing, CAD, etc.

I bought two of the 580's with 3GB a long time ago. The problem with these types of cards is that your GPU chokes before you run out of VRAM. I never got even close to the 3GB and regretted the purchase, even at 2560x1440 that I was running at the time.

Do you think EVGA will allow a step up from the 780 6gb to the 970/980 8gb or if these cards are rare versions will they not be offered in step up?

I just bought a 780 6gb and it is still in shrink wrap. Im tempted to just return it and wait

It would be nice to NVIDIA launch GTX990 8GB.
Dual GM204 full with 8GB. And EVGA to offer 100MHz overclocked version as Classified, similar as 590 Classified.
    I like that model too.
That would be first time in my life to think about Dual Graphic card as upgrade.
Power consumption could be only 40-50% above mine card (GTX780Ti).
That would be excellent hardware no doubt in that.

I think NVIDIA is aware of this but it remains to be seen if NVIDIA will launch such a card soon. Personally I'd like to see NVIDIA increase the memory interface width before increasing the memory amount.

I'm beginning to think we won't see true 8GB cards (not 4GB x 2 GPUs) until the 980ti.  And i don't see that one coming out until AMD launches the 390x.

Yes, but it's hard to believe that NVIDIA launch dual card with 4GB video memory.
They will offer such graphics most for people who want to play on higher resolution and they need at least 6GB.
GTX690 had 4GB video memory. It's hard to believe that they can even think to do something like that.
I only want to remind people on GTX980M with 8GB produced for 1920x1080 resolution.
But notebook have own bad side, cost 2500e new and you got performance of i5-3570K + GTX780 reference and ULTRA SICK 32GB of video memory and 512GB SSD where they earn most of money and you are again tied with wall power socket.
But again they are not limited with video memory, except you pay performance of i5 (i7 mobile) + GTX780 (GTX980M)
same price as 5820K + GTX980 SLI and you can upgrade for two year and even sell own hardware and cover at least some part for upgrade.
Laptops you can't upgrade nothing because manufacturers of best gaming laptops use custom version of mobile graphics and soldered processor impossible for upgrade.
That mean if they put 8GB on GTX980M they probably think good what to do now and than it's hard to believe to install 4GB on Dual GM204.
First time NVIDIA don't need to drop clock or cut cores to reduce temperatures or power consumption.
They could cover everything with one nice cooler as on GTX690, and manufacturers have space for OC.

The 690 was actually 2GB (2x2GB=4GB). If a 990 comes out it would have to be labeled 12GB or 16GB to be 6GB and 8GB effective, which I don't see happening. I also didn't see a 980Ti coming soon until this recent massive shortage of 980s, which would hint that the cores are being stocked for a pending 980Ti, 990, or new Titan launch. I'm also eager to take possible advantage of a step-up to the 980Ti. One can be hopeful...

980+8gb of vram + higher memory bus = nvidias answer to amds 20 nm 390x.

I don't see nvidia making any move until amd brings its new gpu to market.

The battle will be the world's most efficient architecture vs New die with hbm.

It's quite pointless, isn't it?  The mobile version doesn't need 8GB.

I think they might have released 8GB for the mobile version for marketing reasons so that people who assume that more memory is better will be more willing to purchase the newer mobile card.  Also, the mobile cards are way more expensive than desktop cards -- for what you get -- and I guess it sweetens the pot a little bit.

What I don't understand is why there is a mobile version of the 980 that has 8 GB but not the desktop version?

It's quite pointless, isn't it?  The mobile version doesn't need 8GB.

I think they might have released 8GB for the mobile version for marketing reasons so that people who assume that more memory is better will be more willing to purchase the newer mobile card.  Also, the mobile cards are way more expensive than desktop cards -- for what you get -- and I guess it sweetens the pot a little bit.

Nobody from Nvidia has said they would not release an 8 GB version of the 900 Series
but, nobody from Nvidia has said they would release an 8 GB version of the 900 Series
(actually, they could have told there resellers to solder on some more vram, they all just have kept it a big secret) and they have confirmed the specs for the 960)
I'm almost certain they will or would, just when?  If someone will buy it, most often than not they will sell it, and at a pretty penny.

and we all no how, and to who...... or we wouldn't be here, LOL

Ok, so the question is: when is AMD due for their next chip? Not the new architecture in late 2015, but their next launch?

EDIT: The few rumors I just read indicate they're late.

To me nvidia is waiting to see the price point of the new amd gpu. Think about the titan z, no one will pay a butt load of coin for a card that's priced higher then a competitors card that is better at a lower price point.
Since amd has the rights to hmb for a year and isn't skipping 20nm the balls in their court for now.
