Today: 12/5/2010...added new highest settings accomplishment to the list.

You made me feel like a hummer dude!

HMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM, Maybe you are to man, don't sell yourself so short! I mean who would have guessed someone would have posted this right at a time when I really need it the most and it could not have come to this board from a better guy.

This is awesome Jeffrey, now if we can get my new memory and everything else running that way won't that be a hoot and half. Maybe even a holler too (watching too much Big Bang Theory) LMAO. CONGRATZ GUY, YOUR SYSTEM O'CLOCK LOOKS SO DAMN SWEET! Trade ya a QX9650 for your processor LOL. Oh wait maybe I should see what it will do before I promise that.

I think I am going to see if I can figure the memory thing out based on some of your settings above.

Just as an aside, today I OC'ed my video card (still have just one in the system) and I am running ultra high settings on MSFX without even a blink now. What is amazing is that when I OC'ed the GPUs the temperatures dropped and never went above 60C during full play with a lot of water and background effects to boot. I noticed that instead of the GPUs hitting close to 90% usage at times now they are running no higher than about 50%. This seems so strange to me that a little increase in voltage on the GPU processor core and memory had this effect. The card is running so much better I went back to automatic fan speed control at factory specs, LOL it is getting colder outside. One other thing, when I downloaded Futuremark Vantage and installed it I got a reinstall of DX10 and C++ runtimes which could have had affected the GPU processing. Maybe something was mismatched with in one of those two runtime packages.

I do have to give Micah_675 credit for the GPU running so well but I have a feeling that you and Viper with your suggestions on the memory and CPU will completely blow me away when this is all said and done. Flying has never been so great as now, in the house that is, no way can I say it beats the real thing with all that staring at the sky looking for traffic even the blood shot eyes are enjoyable.

Keep these great post coming!

Thank you for your most kind comments.....they are much appreciated. Sorry....but, there is NO WAY that you could talk me into tradin' chips!!!!!!

I look forward to helping you achieve the highest, stable OC that your system can handle. Based upon past experience helping others OC their QX chips....I believe that we should not have too much trouble at all tuning your rig to run at 1600MHz Linked and Synced.

Impressive, im running 4.275 on my qx9650 24/7, barely hits 60c with IBT, However i am running water cooling, i can bench at 4.4 but it begins to get out of comfort level to run 24/7 on a 780i wish i had a 790 now so i could run 1600 ram. Good to see the ol' 775 running strong!

*Just checked my volts. And Yea with the qx i have to push near 1.5v to get stable, i could probably get abit lower with some time. The plain q9650 is doing well. Wish i had one of them now, tho i did get a good price on the qx.

Hello fellow! I would appreciate any assistance you might be able to lend me with OC'ing my EVGA 790i Ultra (if help is possible). Can't seem to keep it stable much past 3.6 ghz. Here's the parts:
E8400 lapped (Noctua NH-D14 for a cooler)
Corsair Dominator GT link 4gb (2x 2gb) in the grey slots

Here are thumbs of the BIOS screens that I think are pertinent:

(below I have all spread spectrum settings disabled)

At 3.6 I can run OCCT with large data sets and neither core goes over 54c. When the OC fails after 3.6 the chip is not overheating. It has been a while since I tried pushing 3.8 on this board, I cannot recall exactly what occurs. If you need more info, let me know. Thanks! :)

Vdroop?? with or without....
so im currious what option you have under the voltage settings in the bios. do you have "without Vdrop" or "with Vdrop" i have no idea what it is..
i assume one of the options is regulates the power to the chips as a safety net so you don't damage anything....
what do you have it on??

thanks

That would be With VDroop....only the FTW board BIOS has the option to run Without VDroop. The settings; as they are listed, are what is set in my BIOS. The CPU vcore "droops" way more than anything else does.

Alright Jeffery.  My turn to ask a few questions here.  Out of my own ignorance.

1.  You kept your memory linked and synched to your FSB the entire time.  Your memory has a base rating of 1600Mhz, and your stock FSB is 1333Mhz. (yes you know this, I'm typing it so I teach it to myself)  So as you OC your cpu by increasing the FSB (not multiplier?) after you bypass FSB 1600 Mhz, you're also OCing your memory.  That's not a question, but I get that now.  That makes sense.

2.  You had increased your FSB by approx 37% (1333 to 1828) before you touched your MCP (Southbridge voltage value).  Is it normal to get that high of a FSB jump before tweaking the MCP or SPP?  I've got a Q9300 (also a 1333 Mhz FSB) I'm just trying to figure out how far I can push it before I tweak voltages on MCP & SPP.

3.  Why tweak your GTLVREF?  I thought it just controlled the voltage that your CPU considered on/off?

There will be more I'm sure.  I'm working hard to understand things well before I really get into my bios and mess with things.  I'm reading and comparing everything I can find, just sometimes I need a little help. =)

Hey Jeff......thanks for posting this. Good stuff!
Looks like you didn't have much trouble with 8g's of ram as long as it was above or below 1600mhz.? (At some point I'd like to add another 4 g's, and/or a new GPU for DX11)
Anyway, I may try and OC above where I am now with your settings. I have the Patriot Viper EP series (1600 mhz) with the silver heatsyncs, but I think this memory has a good amount of headroom, and works great with this board.
As you know, I can't increase the multiplier with my cpu, but I've had great results with Linked/sync'ed. One thing that stood out to me was your timings remained good, and your ram voltage stayed at 1.9v.
Should I just simply follow your bios settings, or am I missing something? (I've had such good luck with bios version P07, that I haven't had a need to update)

(1) Stock multiplier on my chip is 9x and cannot be increased above that...can go lower if wanted to tho. Yes, you have the gist of what I did correct.

(2) This really depends on how much other hardware you are running...especially the number of GFX cards. Also, no two boards are going to handle exactly the same...yours could do better or worse than mine....you'll have to experiment to know what yours requires. Multiplier on your chip is 7.5x so, that is going to also limit how high you'll be able to take it.

(3) Actually, I did not find any need to "tweak" the GTLVREF's. They were set on AUTO while making my changes and you should see the values change as your FSB changes. All I did....after changing speeds and passing tests...was to manually set in the same values that Auto assigned to them so, that they would not get changed. The same principle was used with the Advanced Memory Settings.

Thank you for your kind remarks....and you are welcome.

Yeah....my settings were done with the 9x multi and yours is 8.5x so, you are probably not going to be able to exactly match my results. You could use mine as a starting point and adjust up or down from there...you'll just have to experiment to see what your board "wants" / requires.

To be totally honest...I kind of wish that I had not bought a 2nd pair of RAM stix and had used that money towards something else. I do not have a REAL NEED for running 8GB's (I just wanted to fill the slots) but, since I did pay $140 for them....I feel obligated to run them.

Good luck to you and if you need any help with your adjustments....please start a new thread here in this Forum and we'll do our best to assist you.

1)  So you kept things linked and synched, thus you only increased your FSB as you went along.  You didn't need to OC your RAM, it basically OC'd itself as you increased the FSB.  You did have to tweak timings though...or were those "Auto" that you set to "manual" after you found stability?

2) I think herein lies where OC'ing gets me down at.  It's the fact that I can't crunch the values that need to change based on interpolation.  It's such a "Trial and Error" experiment with the MCP & SPP.  Sometimes you might have to give them another 0.05V.  Sometimes not.  Who knows?!  Engineering school taught me to stop thinking that way =P

3)  the GTLVREF part makes sense now.  You tested it and it was stable at it's auto setting, so you MANUALLY told it to stay put, and thereby hopefully staying stable.

(1-2) L&S increases/decreases both together by adjusting the FSB up or down. Yes, you have to manually experiment trial and error with the RAM's main timings when not running at their rated spex....Auto setting does not do well at all for them (even at rated speed)......but, Auto does pretty good for the Advanced Memory Settings.

(3) Correct....NOTHING is left on AUTO after tests are passed....all Auto values are manually set in.

I may ask obvious questions, but when obvious answers keep me from torching a CPU....I ask anyway lol.

Thanks for all the help so far.  I'll holler when I find a way to confuse myself again!

Thank you for your kind remarks....and you are welcome.

To be totally honest...I kind of wish that I had not bought a 2nd pair of RAM stix and had used that money towards something else. I do not have a REAL NEED for running 8GB's (I just wanted to fill the slots) but, since I did pay $140 for them....I feel obligated to run them.

Exactly what I started thinking......4GB's is fine, and that money will go to a new DX11 GPU along with what I can sell my 280 GTX SC for. Sounds like a better plan as far as RAM goes!
