History so far: I have recently looking for upgrades for my desktop http://forums.evga.com/tm.aspx?m=978948 Bought a 560Ti as videocard remplacement and 2 kits of Patriot Memory PGS34G1600ELK to sit on 8GB (im not only a gamer but Photoshop and AutoCad user) After researching for 790i + 8GB on this forums i went out and started my tests also following JeffreyHam assistance on this topic http://forums.evga.com/tm.aspx?m=850646 he was helping another user but his problem was just the same as mine. To summarise a bit what i did: - Ran memtest86+ 4.20 on each stick for at least 8 hours without errors.
- Ran memtest86+ 4.20 on each pair of sticks for at least 8 hours without errors.
Then after that i started to test a pair of memories at 1333 link/sync with the cpu BIOS Version: P08 **System ** CPU Freq, MHz: 2666.7 GHZ FSB Reference Clock, MHz: 1333.3 CPU Multiplier: [8X] PCle x16-1 & 16-2, MHz: [100] PCle x16-3, MHz: [100] SPPc->MCP Ref Clock, MHz: [200] nForce SPP --> nForce MCP: [5X] nForce SPP c-- nForce MCP: [5X] **Spread Spectrum** CPU Spread Spectrum: [Disabled] HT Spread Spectrum: [Disabled] PCle Spread Spectrurn(SPP): [Disabled] PCle Spread Spectrurn(MCP): [Disabled] SATA Spread Spectrum: [Disabled] **FSB & Memorv Config** FSB - Memory Clock Mode: [Unlinked] FSB - Memory Ratio: Auto FSB (QDR), MHz: [1333] Actual FSB (QDR), MHz: 1333.3 x MEM (DDR) MHz: 1333 Actual MEM (DDR), MHz: 1333 P1: [AUTO] P2: [AUTO] **Memory Timing Setting** Memory Timing Setting: [Optimal] tCL (CAS Latency): 7 tRCD: 9 tRP: 9 tRAS: 25 Command Per Clock: [1T] ** Advanced Memory Settings ** tRRD: [Auto 5] tRC: [Auto 34] tWR: [Auto 12] tWTR: [Auto 17] tFAW: [Auto 26] tREF: [Auto 7.7uS] tRFC: [Auto 74] **System Voltages** CPU Core: [Auto 1.20] CPU FSB: [Auto 1.1v] Memory: [Auto 1.500v] nForce SPP: [Auto 1.30] nForce MCP: [Auto 1.500] GTLVREF Lane 0: [Auto -30mv] GTLVREF Lane 1: [Auto +10mv] GTLVREF Lane 2: [Auto 00mv] GTLVREF Lane 3: [Auto 00mv] **CPU Configuration** Limit CPUlD Maxval: Disabled Intel Speedstep: Disabled xPPM Mode: [Native] CPU Thermal Control: [Disabled] C1E Enhanced Halt State: [Disabled] Execute Disable Bit: [Disabled] Virtualization Technology: [Disabled] CPU Core 0: [Enabled] CPU Core 1: [Enabled] CPU Core 2: [Enabled] CPU Core 3: [Enabled] No problems so far, i can boot 5 times into BIOS without problems and enter into OS too, seems stable. Notes: Setting CPU Core or FSB volt values manually to 1.30 will cause instability, setting then back to AUTO 1.30 would fix the problem, i think that this is caused due Vdroop. Intel Burn Test 2.51 wont pass on 20Pass@Maximum Any help is welcome but if JeffreyHam or VistaHead can help (i have seen that they have a lot of experience with this memory model and 790i) it would be great. Thanks to everyone in advance.

Looks like you are running a q9550?? Except that you would be using a multiplier of 8.5. So I'm not sure which CPU or 790i we are talking about here. What I do know it that with my 790i FTW a qx9770, the same RAM as you are running, I just LINK and run stable at either 3.6 or 4.2. I change no settings to RAM/ A basic vanilla OC. Same rig with a Q9550 gives me 28 or 3.2, just Linked. Very stable and powered with strong PSU. I cannot speak for a 790i SLI, different MB.

followed that guide, but didnt help that much, ended with BSOD at windows start and later C1 post code on mobo, returned back to previous settings im able to boot into windows and work normally for a while with this settings: **FSB & Memorv Config** FSB - Memory Clock Mode: [Linked] FSB - Memory Ratio: Sync Mode FSB (QDR), MHz: [1600] Actual FSB (QDR), MHz: 1600 x MEM (DDR), MHz: 1600 Actual MEM (DDR), MHz: 1600 P1: [AUTO] P2: [AUTO] **Memory Timing Setting** Memory Timing Setting: [Expert] tCL (CAS Latency): 9 tRCD: 9 tRP: 9 tRAS: 24 Command Per Clock: [2T] ** Advanced Memory Settings ** tRRD: [Auto 6] tRC: [Auto 41] tWR: [Auto 12] tWTR: [Auto 18] tFAW: [Auto 31] tREF: [Manual 7.8uS] tRFC: [Auto 88] **System Voltages** CPU Core: [Auto 1.30] CPU FSB: [Auto 1.3v] Memory: [Manual 1.800v] nForce SPP: [Manual 1.30] nForce MCP: [Manual 1.500] GTLVREF Lane 0: [Auto -50mv] GTLVREF Lane 1: [Auto -50mv] GTLVREF Lane 2: [Auto 00mv] GTLVREF Lane 3: [Auto 00mv] but apps will crash randomly and system bsod when doing intel burn test (it doesnt bsod -sometimes- but results doesnt match, system is unstable)

Hey TPB, The big problem from what I have found is that most of the 790i Ultra's do not like to run 4 stix of RAM at 1600MHz....possibly a FSB hole at that speed. I run 8GB's of the Patriot model # PVS34G1600LLK and have worked extensively to run 4 stix at 1600MHz and failed. Using the same exact settings that you have posted above....please remove the two stix from the Gray colored slots and report the results. Thankx.

(I skipped copying and pasting the settings)....then the following: "System is still stable and im writing this from the same computer, but the issue is that i can not run the 4 sticks @1600 or @1333 stable, i run into BSOD as soon as i enter into Windows or just after."

Let's see if 1600Mhz is a FSB hole for you with 4 sticks of RAM. Lower your CPU multiplier by one setting, and please try the below changes. **FSB & Memorv Config** FSB - Memory Clock Mode: [Linked] FSB - Memory Ratio: Sync Mode FSB (QDR), MHz: [1700] Actual FSB (QDR), MHz: 1700 x MEM (DDR), MHz: 1700 Actual MEM (DDR), MHz: 1700 P1: [AUTO] (enabled) P2: [AUTO] (enabled) **Memory Timing Setting** Memory Timing Setting: [Expert] tCL (CAS Latency): 9 tRCD: 9 tRP: 9 tRAS: 24 Command Per Clock: [2T] ** Advanced Memory Settings ** tRRD: [Auto 6] tRC: [Auto 41] tWR: [Auto 12] tWTR: [Auto 18] tFAW: [Auto 31] tREF: [Manual 7.8uS] tRFC: [Auto 88] (110) **System Voltages** CPU Core: [Auto 1.30] (1.35v) CPU FSB: [Auto 1.3v] (1.30v) Memory: [Manual 1.800v] (1.90v) nForce SPP: [Manual 1.30] (1.45v) nForce MCP: [Manual 1.500] GTLVREF Lane 0: [Auto -50mv] GTLVREF Lane 1: [Auto -50mv] GTLVREF Lane 2: [Auto 00mv] GTLVREF Lane 3: [Auto 00mv]

MHO is that he is going to have to go to 1800MHz L&S with; at best, 10-10-10-30-2T timings to run 8GB's of that RAM.

I am inclined to agree with you...I just want to see if 1600Mhz is a FSB hole with four sticks of RAM...we already know that it is not with two. I also wonder if his CPU could handle the 1800Mhz FSB frequency while using the max multiplier.

The only way to find out if the CPU and cooling system can handle it is to give 'er a shot....it would be worthwhile to try. EDIT: BTW, regarding this setting: tRFC: [Auto 88] (110) .....88 is right on the money for 1600MHz...IMHO...110 would be appropriate for 2000MHz. 1700MHz is also a no go on mine with 8GB's RAM.

Does the CPU hit those temps and then goes back down, or are they consistently in the high 70's when running the test? Try bumping your memory voltage to 1.90v.

Increasing RAM volt and testing again. Yes those tems are consistent during test, then on iddle they go down to 55-44-44-44 / SPP 57 / MCP 50

☄ Helpful
I'm sorry but, you kinda have your testing proceedures outta whack. First you need to test those RAM timings with MemTest to see if you get any errors during 1 complete pass. If you get any, there is no sense going any further...you'll need to make timing adjustments. Not to contadict VH but, I don't think 1.9v on the RAM is going to make any difference....stick with the rated 1.8v. After you complete MemTest error-free then, run IBT to test CPU. You don't want to waste time running 3DMark until after you know your system is stable with the OC. I figured that your CPU was going to run too hot with those settings but, I wanted to see how your cooler would do. Looks like it would take a vcore increase of 1-2 settings higher than my first suggested 1.40v to get it stable but, your cooler is not going to cut it. Were those temps in your SS in post #19 load or idle temps. with the 7x multi??

Yes my temps are getting quite high on multi x8 hitting late 70's and (temps on pic are on x7) uppping more the vcore would make them hit the mid 80s Right now with the settings of post #17 im getting: CPU is running really hot on IBT, 79-75-71-72 / SPP 57 / MCP 46 iddle they go down to 55-44-44-44 / SPP 57 / MCP 50 I will try them memtest86+ 4.20 with the settings of post #17 and @1.8v this is probly taking a while, anyways im up until late. THANK YOU GUYS FOR YOUR HELP SO FAR!

OK.....if the RAM completes 1 test pass error-free then we know those timings are fine......I would then try my exact posted settings with the 7x Multi. I know it (core temps) will still be pretty hot but, if will pass the test then, you can lower it (vcore) 1 setting and test again and keep doing that until it fails. BTW, your MCP and SPP temps are just fine.....it is only the CPU we need to worry about. Is there any way that you can get your ambient room temp down??? That would certainly help.

Im now runnning memtest with the exact settings from your post #17 with multi x7, night time already here and temps dropped down a bit, cool nights on this time of the year, but during daytime i would need some extra coolling from the air conditioner, maybe if i move my computer to the other room i could benefit from it during tests, but normally this pc should be on the room without ac (yes i know it sucks) im considering to do some lapping and replace the TIM on my heatsink (AS Ceramique) I will report back in an hour or so with results of memtest!
