Hey all, I guess ill start with my specs:
mobo: evga nforce 780i
video card: nvidia geforce 9800 gx2
ram: Corsair Dominator 2x 2048mb 1066mhz
processor: Intel q6600@2.4ghz
psu: antec true power quattro 800w
Before I begin let me state that im not too knowledgeable about computers.
When I turned on my computer this afternoon the mobo beeped long once for 1 or 2 seconds then beeped twice quickly and gave me a 7F error code on the little lcd display. My monitor remained dark giving me a no input error.
After looking this problem up people recommended to others to reset the cmos with the jumper and remove the battery and put it back in. They also suggested putting the video card in a different slot. I tried both of these and they didnt work. When I hit F1 on my keyboard the error code shifts to FF, but I still dont have any display on my monitor so I dont know whats going on past that. I have also swapped out RAM, so im thinking mobo or video card... (unfortunately I dont have a spare gpu to drop in and test)
Before this my video card had been acting up, its fans would rev up and down and my monitor would go into standby showing no input. Is it time for a new gpu or mobo? Any ideas?
As an aside, anyone know if I could go to best buy, get a gpu, drop it in to test then return it? ;)

    Fathomblack,

7F either means no video card is detected, or waiting for user input. If you hit F1 and the board continued to post that means it does detect a graphics card, but obviously something isn't functioning right.

Have you tried another cable/monitor combination to rule them out as possibilities?

    Thanks,

I have tried two different monitors, one with hdmi and dvi and the other with dvi. So youre saying that if it changes from 7F to FF after I hit F1 its at least detecting the video card, but that something could still be wrong with it?

    Fathomblack,

Yes, it is detecting a graphics card installed. Otherwise it would stay at 7f no matter what. That does not mean the card is functioning properly, but as far as the board is concerned its present. You can test yourself by removing the graphics card, it will hit 7f, and hitting f1 should not cycle through. If it does let us know as something else maybe going on here.

    Thanks,

Okay, well I removed my video card and booted it up. It cycled through to 7F and moved on to FF after I hit F1. is there something wrong with the mobo then?

If it didn't work with that video card, then you need to try another video card to rule out it being the video card or motherboard. It's a process of elimination.
