Hi all,
I've recently been having some issues with stuttering both graphically in Windows and in the bootup menu (pre-Windows). This started happening after I did a Windows sleep and was unable to successfully enter sleep mode or recover without pulling the plug. I'm now noticing a lot of entries since then in the Windows Event Viewer saying:
Log name: System
Source: Kernal-Processor-Power
Event ID: 35
Task Category: (2)
Level: Error
User: SYSTEM
OpCode: Info

I have not upgraded to the latest BIOS yet, partly because I can't find the latest version on this website >.< I have a X58 SLI Hydro copper (E769). Any thoughts on where I can get the latest BIOS revision?

Just for reference, I have a 1000W Corsair PSU, I don't think the PSU has all of a sudden gone bad.

Any thoughts/suggestions would be appreciated greatly!

Edit: Didn't realize I didn't have specs in sig:
i7 920 D0, x58 SLI hydro copper, 2x GTX 275, 1000W Corsair PSU, 12 gb ram, OCZ Vertex 60gb, Velociraptor 150gb, Random other 500gb HDD, DVD drive

Could you describe in more detail what you mean by "suttering".  For example, do you mean the screen is flickering at the boot-up menu during POST?  Or is it more of a sluggish performance?  Depending on the symptoms we could be looking at a number of things.

In the mean time, don't use sleep or standby, and try some of the following and see if the "stuttering" goes away.

For the sluggish performance in Windows, Disable link-state power management
  • go to Start - Type in "Power Options"
  • select the High perfomance plan
  • click "change plan settings"
  • click "Change advanced power settings"
  • click "Change settings that are currently unavailable"
  • under the "PCI Express" locate "Link State Power Management" and make sure it is set to off.
  • While there, also look under the Hard Disk section and make that is set to never turn off the hard disk.
  • Under the USB section, disable the USB selective suspend.
And see if your performance improves.  You could also go into the BIOS and try disabling the C-States as well as EIST (speedstep).

These steps aren't necessarily solutions, but may help us figure out the cause of the problem.

In the meantime, you should be able to use the BIOS for the E760 board, since the boards are functionaly identical, although I'm not sure that will correct the problem (and hopefully new BIOSes will be available soon with new ROMs for the controllers which might help you.)  I will post in the BIOS thread letting them know that they forgot to put up a BIOS specific for the E769.

By stuttering I mean that any application that is even vaguely graphically intense (adobe flash, games, etc.) will show some sort of latency or difficulty in updating itself on the screen (almost like it is skipping frames). Outside of Windows, the screen is updated very slowly, line by line and in some cases I can see it printing out the line from left to right as opposed to the whole line being printed out at once. I made the changes you suggested within Windows, but I have been unable to check them as I also did a BIOS update to 78 of E760 and now I get a:
DISK BOOT FAILURE, INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER
message when I try to boot off of either my harddrive or the Windows 7 cd. I have tried toggling various switches within the BIOS to set peripherals as IDE or AHCI modes (I have no raid) but to no avail.
Obviously the nature of my problem has changed slightly...

In that case I would flash back to the BIOS you previously had and continue troubleshooting.  Like I said, hopefully a better BIOS will be available in the coming weeks with better option ROMs anyways.

Thanks for clarifying what you mean by stuttering.  I should have noticed that you're a folder, so you're probably folding on your video cards as well, I presume?  That can cause stuttering if you're not running an Aero desktop theme. Try turning both with and without Aero (by switching from the Windows 7 Aero theme and the Windows 7 basic theme) and see if you notice a difference with the stuttering.

The desktop will probably feel more responsive with an Aero-based desktop theme.

Still a no go, I tried E760_77, E760_S61H (picked at random when 77 didn't work), and the very earliest BIOS release available (E760_S610). I'm still getting the DISK BOOT FAILURE message when I have both my PATA optical drive with Win 7 CD and my boot HDD hooked up. For these three BIOSes I did not fiddle with the Onboard PATA/SATA Device settings as I assumed they would at least see the Win 7 CD correctly as a bootable CD.

In Win7 I do use Aero, and I only fold when I am sleeping or not playing games. Previously I did not notice any negative impact of this kind, so it is definitely a new thing.

EDIT: Interesting, on a whim I popped my Ubuntu Bootable CD in and it loaded fine. I'll have to redownload Win7 from MSDN and I'll see if that works.

edit:
It sounds like your boot order got changed to default to booting off the CD, or perhaps you had the CD and pressed enter to fast causing it to try and boot from the CD.  So try to define the boot order in BIOS. (Advanced BIOS Features -> Hard Disk Boot Priority -> use the + and - keys to make sure the drive Windows is installed on is listed first)

I'll have to think on this further.  For it to be updating the screen that slowly during POSTing is odd.  And this all started after a failed sleep cycle?

There are a lot of directions we could take trying to solve this, a few examples:
Doing a full CMOS clear/reload default values then manually entering in the values (to avoid any problematic saved profiles)
Try disconnecting your solid state drive and see if the screen still refreshes slowly in the POST screens (to see if it's a controller communication problem there)
Use the PCI Express disable jumpers on the motherboard to isolate the video cards.
We could also try looking into voltages.

Let me know how things are going.   It's pretty odd to see such slow screen refreshes like that that we might want to call EVGA.  Any chance you could post a video showing the stuttering during POST?

I tried setting the boot order, that's a no-go...although I did burn a new Win7 disk and that is booting up fine, so that solves the mystery of not being able to boot from the Windows disk.
Now that you mention it, I do not see any slow refreshes on the POST screen. There is only one other place (outside of Windows) where I REALLY noticed it and that was on booting into Windows safe mode. I'm apparently not there yet, still having boot issues, but maybe it was a problem w/ the CMOS? I cleared the CMOS after every BIOS update.
Lastly, I think my boot record may be fubared, so I'll try to repair that with the Win7 disk.

Will report back later, thanks for sticking with it Davabled :)

Good luck!  I'm very glad to hear that the slow-downs are just occuring after the OS loads.

Did you try cleaning out your video drivers?  I wouldn't be surprised that the failed sleep cycle caused the video drivers to get stuck in low-power 3d mode, I've had that happen before and a full clean and reinstall of the drivers fixed it.

Ok, now that I've restored the MBR to a working mode, reset CMOS, updated BIOS and chipset drivers and updated graphics drivers, I can say the stuttering problem has gone.

My hunch tells me that it could have been a CMOS setting, either I was trying to drive something harder than it should have been or the failed sleep state caused something to bork. Either way, I think I'm up and running now. Thanks for your help and pointing me to the right BIOS update :)

Your welcome, glad it's working for you :)

Sorry the little miscommunication had you going on wild goose-chases.  Let us know if it crops up again.
