What do enthusiasts do regardless of the price of the components? They look for every possible way to drop the temp even if by only 1c.

So here we have the GTX-660 SC 2gb.

Its a clean looking almost completely reference design, my particular unit spends most of its time running about 1110mhz boost. However with the Fan set @ 55% the GPU works its way up to about 77C, warmer then I like. So lets take it apart and find out what everything looks like down there.

Having too much thermal paste is always better then having too little, In all the time I've owned EVGA products, and this is only my opinion I have never received a unit with a proper tim job. More then adequate for mass production and far better then what I've seen from some other AIB's but still in my opinion, too much is being used.

Lets clean things up.

Ok, ready to put it back together, but I have an itch, and I hate to say it, I must scratch.

I wonder will this fit....

yes.

That is one of my old Zalman VF-900-CUs god I loved these things back on my 9800's in theory these cards should be low enough of a TDP for this cooler to keep it MORE then cool being that the VF-900 is rated for 150w.

I'll get to testing that out later once I acquire some extra vram sinks to use on the VRM's

Anyways, a little bit of MX-2 later + some VRam sinks and were done!

So it will take a few days for the MX-2 to fully seat but initial results are wonderful.

Ambient: 30c

Before: 77C
After: 70C

7C, yep its fun times ahead.

Do those RAM heatsinks actually work?

It may, or may not help, But half the vram is cooled, the other half wasnt, I have 8 of those vram sinks left so I used 4 for the back side chips. I would like to find 4 more so I can use them on the VRM setup and actually try the VF-900 on the 660.

There is no performance advantage to a backplate. Why wait?

Well 1st of all  this particular model has memory chips on the backside of the pcb, so the backplate with some thermal padding would provide cooling for those chips. That is a practical advantage in my book.

And another thing - backplate makes the card and the pc in general look way cleaner, in other words its aesthetically attractive.

My GTX 660 Ti SuperClocked (with offset gets up to 1288 and ram at 3300mhz) stays decently cool on stock (around 65 C) when the fan is at 40-50%. Even better when I turn it up but then the noise starts bothering me and to me 65 is okay... one time for some reason the auto fan thing didn't work and it got up to 90 C and it scared the hell out of me lol

lol nevermind, doesn't seem to be the case when running Crysis 2... it gets in the low 70's but still, not too bad.

Thanks for the comment, although I wish I could say it is a great feat, 5ghz on the FX-line is about as common as people obtaining 5ghz on the Sandy Bridge by Intel. Just that the Intel runs circles round the FX. I do happen to have this FX-4100 under a Corsair H100 with the fans only configured in a pull setup.
