Hey all so i had my rig for about 4/5 months. I had it overclocked at 4.4ghz at 1.28 VID. Everything was fine passed 24 hrs prime95, IBT aida stress test. Was working beautifully , then all of a sudden like 4 days ago. I was getting bsods gaming. I messed with everything trying to get it stable. Long story short had to increase vid to 1.3 volts. Before i was able to hit 4.6 at that voltage but wasnt comfortable 24/7 at that. Now i got no choice in order to stay at 4.4 i need 1.3. SO... Is the chip degraded? Temps were fine 30-35 idle, 45-50 full load. It never stayed at full load either. Im just curious why all of a sudden i need a higher voltage. Thanks every1.

Degraded or you never were fully stable.

yeah i hope it was just the fact that i wasnt 100% stable. Thought i had a good chip,  guess it was just "fair". But i hope it isnt degraded already. I got a tuning plan, my brother said overclock it back to 4.6 and see what happens, if it bsods i could call intel and get another chip.

Out of curiosity what is the PSU your rig's feeding off?

Do you have a killawatt meter to see what you are pulling from the wall?

I think the only way to degrade ones chip is by excessive heat.  Not sure if a chip can get degraded other than heat and super high clocks.  I think you're sitting ok on the OC you're on.  I could only think it just isn't 100% stable.  Might need to give it a little more voltage is my guess.

AFAIK, the sweet spot for 5930ks is 4.5Ghz.

If it hasnt degraded, has to be i was never fully stable to begin with. Good buddy of mine, been overclocking since pentium 4 told me that i was lucky it didnt bsod before that. He said its impossible to have degraded that fast. Has to be i wasnt 100% stable to begin with. Sucks i swear, this is my 4th chip e8500,q9550,3770k,5930k. Only the 8500 was a "good" overclocking chip. Maybe it just me but i never get a "great" overclocking chip.

I'm willing to bet it was just a stability issue, I had the same thing happen to me with a 3770k. I had months of "stability" before BSODs starting happening and I had to re-configure my overclock a little. I understand what you mean about never getting a good overclocker, my 5930k will only hit 4.2ghz at 1.3 volts :( Temps are still great though (usually 29 to 31c idle and 39 to 41c under load), so I can't really complain, its fast enough for me. Hope you solved your issue though.

Yeah i ended up at 1.314 volts for 4.56ghz. I wont go higher than that. Temps are 33/38 idle --- 58/64 load. Ran stab test 24 hr never went over 65. Im fine with that. My 3770k never was good at 4.5ghz would be way too hot, then again it wasn't water cooled. Thanks everyone for input.

Prime for 24 hours is just (Edited out for Foul Language) + i never liked prime, I use aida64 or asus realbench , I mean even only 30 min should be enough, If it pass that do 0.5V more let say 1.300 passing 30 min, Then take it upp to 1.305, Just to be sure
Done that on the cpus i had 3930k/3970X/4960X/5960X :)

I never push hardware to the end, like Sajin say degradation sometimes happen faster then customers think.
4.5-4.6GHz for chip is high clock for Haswell E. For me 4.2GHz is some max for normal every day usage.
At the moment I keep i7-5820K on 4.0GHz 1.150V, for few weeks I will increase on 1.200-1250V and 4.2GHz...
If processor don't need lot voltage I will keep him on 4.2GHz, if processor is weaker and need more voltage I will keep him on 4.0GHz...
I don't know only how much to keep Min/Max CPU Cache Ratio for CPU Core 40. Now I keep on 26, 2600MHz.

It's weird how many owners of stores and shops and advanced users upgrade on i7-5820K for self.
Some of them didn't change platform long time, from 1136 period. Probably people recognize nice but not to expensive processor and good chance...
For smart people is enough to see same Cache size as 4960X, same number of cores, DDR4 support and price about 350$ to choose him over any other processor. Except rich people, they will go on i7-5960X off course.

I have the i7 5930 and it's clocked at 4.2GHz at 1.27V. It runs very stably with heats @ ~30C idle and can go 40-50 under load. Knock on wood, never had a BSOD. I have pushed it to 4.5GHz, but with 1.37V. Heats up a little more, but not appreciably. Cooling is a closed loop Corsair H80I. Do you have memory with XMP profiles?  I set mine up @ the 2667MHz setting. I believe that's my secret.

XTU is the only stability test approved by Intel. They can actually viod your warranty if they find out you used Prime95:

I used Prime95 before for Ivy Bridge but after i7-4770K show up nobody use Prime95 and LinX any more.
I will follow what other people say, Intel Xtreme Utility, AIDA64 with CPU, FPU, Cache and Memory and RealBench 2.41...
And people who write Prime95 and Furmark should stop to write software capable to damage hardware with unreal usage...
We need application capable to simulate real work of CPU in most demanding 3D rendering applications available.
It's bad someone to damage expensive hardware with unreal tests, and from other side it's bad to protect processor and keep him from something what can really happen if you need to work most demanding application for processors 100%.
I really like skin and look of Intel Xtreme Utility. One of nicest software of such type I ever saw.
I hope they will update him if need not to become old after some time.

Yeah i use aida for stretch test. Its great for HasE's.
