I am utterly confused when trying to figure out a good gaming monitor under $800.00 US.I am on my 2nd Asus monitor and trust the quality but I see Samsung/Acer have some in the game.Where I am so confused...get a G-sync 1080p/144mhz(around 800.00)thats allotta clams for a 1080p!,or get a 1440 at 60mhz(varied prices). Will run single monitor w/ a couple 980's in SLI.I am so close to pulling the trigger on a new build and this is my last hurdle. My way of thinking is to hold off on 4k for now, but I want a great gaming monitor that can handle what my x2 980's will throw at it.I care about eye candy and ultra smooth gaming and wonder if Nvidias hype of the G Sync is worth it.

Don't know if this will help, but had a similar issue. I decided to go 4K with the Asus PB287Q, newegg had it on sale for $579. I'm going to get 2 EVGA GTX 970 SSC's for SLI and use them. Currently I have a 4GB 760. It's my office and secondary game machine. My biggest worry is how small the fonts etc will be at 4K on a 28" monitor. I'm sure I'll be able to adjust the visuals to fit the new screen space. The monitor has decent reviews, and IPS is still little to expensive. I looked at the G-Sync 1440 and others like it, and the price was few hundred more. But figure 4K would be worth it. We'll see.

I was going to suggest the PG278Q. I just looked at it on newegg and it's $1500.

Glad I got mine for $780'ish.

Go to Amazon. They list it for less.

Something I found about New Egg is that they are higher than Amazon in the majority of their products.
