There really isn't anything magical about 2180p. Just make a machine that can handle Nvidia Surround and it'll run 4k. Triple display and 4k have similar pixel count to push.

For a system build under $3k, I would go for an i7 cpu and 1x GTX980.  Put at least 12GB of memory for gaming as 6GB doesn't seem to cut it for some games.  Also a really nice ultra wide monitor like the LG 34UC97-S or LG 34UM95-P.

I've been rocking an i7 930 (lga1366) since 2010.  It is still going strong and does what I need to without maxing out.  Thou the X58 motherboard is now the bottleneck as it doesn't support NVidia GPU's 600 series and higher.

    Crystal: Intel i7 930 3.6GHz(OC) / EVGA X58 758 / 3x 4GB Corsair XMS3 / GTX 660Ti FTW+ / 2x GTX 560Ti SLI
    Quartz (mothball): Intel i7 2600k 3.8GHz / EVGA Z77 Stinger mITX / 2x 4GB Corsair XMS3 / GTX 660Ti SC
    Mercury: Intel i5 3570k 4.2GHz(OC) / ASRock Z68 mITX / 1x 4GB Corsair XMS3 / 2x GTX 1660 Super
    Cobalt: Intel i7 4710HQ 2.5Ghz / ASUS GL551JM-DH71 / 2 x 8GB / GTX 860m - Gaming/Physics/Astronomy Laptop

That's not true. Have no issue running a GTX770 in mine.

Gonna agree with Brad here, running my new shiny gtx 980 in my x58 with a x5650, doesn't even bottleneck the gpu, get pretty much the same fps as all the review say. If you only do gaming, you don't really need a x99 i7 extreme, if your on a budget the money would be better spent with a soild x79 or even a z97. Then put the difference into more/better gpu's.

I've been running 4K for almost a year now with the hardware you see in my profile and unless you plan on using multiple monitors it should be okay for everyone except the most hardcore.
If I could upgrade I'd definitely get a 980 or even a 780 with more memory on the card.
I notice if I attach a second monitor along with the 4K it will eat up video memory big time so sometimes I notice the desktop get sluggish with 2 monitors and if I look at the memory usage on the vidcard using gpu-z I see it's almost using up the max 3GB of video card memory!!!
Then again you are really running at 5760x2160 resolution when you are adding 2nd monitor!
so no wonder it starts to get slow. If I stick with just the 4K monitor by itself never see the slowdowns or sluggish windows.

So yeah at least a 980gtx and make sure you use an SSD drive too.
