Well what do you guys think? Do a build now with a 4790k? Or wait for Skylake? Would imagine Windows 10 will be launched by then as well or shortly after.

I love my i7 4790K as it is... it's going to be a viable processor for years to come. Even after Skylake releases, they will still have great resell value if you decide you want to jump platforms. Just make sure to not over spend on your motherboard, since motherboards usually have bad resell values.

I Still love my 2600k and 3570k and other 3rd gen set ups. Nothing has forced me to want to upgrade. Thank god because I don't have the money to upgrade yet. But You still ahead of me and I can still play with ultra high settings on 3 HDTVs in SLI if needed.  remember you can always upgrade when you really want too. Its harder to downgrade and hurts more too. Just my opinion. Good luck.

A few things should be considered. First, if we look at what will be released (6700K with 4GHz base clock, 4.2GHz Turbo):
    http://techreport.com/news/28173/possible-skylake-desktop-cpu-specs-leak
and the reported IPC increase (20%):
    http://wccftech.com/intel-skylake-benchmarks-leaked-sisoftware-sandra/
the 6700K should have the equivalent performance of a 4.8GHz Haswell at base clock, 5.04GHz Haswell at Turbo. Of course, you should be able to overclock beyond 4.2GHz on Skylake; but for Haswell, you may have trouble overclocking past 5GHz.

So performance will be better, but no where near double. Assuming that you can OC to the same clock as Haswell, 20% faster is what you will have. But with game settings that make the CPU a limit (1080p/1200p or even 1440p/1600p and SLI), every bit helps.

The more interesting aspect of Skylake is the chipset. With 20 PCIe 3.0 lanes from the PCH, 12 of which can be used for NVMe storage, (add on the fact that the interconnect back to the CPU is being updated from PCIe 2.0 x4 to PCIe 3.0 x4) you have a much faster solution than Z97.
See here for more on the chipset:
    http://wccftech.com/intel-skylake-s-platform-specifications-detailed-z170-100series-chipset-replace-z97-2h-2015/

As for the GPU, for the K models, don't expect much of an increase over Haswell's K models. We may see HDMI 2.0 support though. I doubt we will see DisplayPort 1.3 yet.

^ Just made it that much tougher to decide. Leaning towards Skylake though atm. I mean I waited this long. I think my current system should be able to ride out until that release. Its still decent imo. But, I feel its time for a upgrade.

If I reuse my GTX 660 and 500gb hdd for now. You think I can get a decent 4790k build for 1k or slightly under? I think it would be pretty tight? SSD is a must. I was looking at the Samsung 850 Pro 256gb? All parts would be bought from newegg. Overclocking. Could careless but its there if I ever wanted to in the future. Highly doubtful. Specs I would like that I think are okay? Simple build. Lego style. Nothing fancy. I am easy to please. It would be my first build I ever put together myself. Hence lego style. I have upgraded pc parts in the past. Cpu, video card, memory, psu things like that. Just never put a whole pc together myself.

Yeah, that's another reason the i7 4790K is such a great buy... It's all ready clocked pretty high.

This is a similar motherboard to mine, gives you a ton of features for a good price compared to the competition.

This is the RAM i'd go with:
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231589

SSD's go on sale pretty often. I got my MX100 for $175 about 4 months ago. If I were in the market for one right now, i'd probably get the Crucial MX200 or a Intel 730 drive. Samsung is good too, but i'm partial to Micron drives and i'm not big on Samsung's EVO TLC drives. Samsung's Pro series are MLC though.

Case is gonna be up to you... Corsair makes some pretty nice cases though, very easy to work on.

Almost forgot... When your building your new machine and you get a new case, make sure to use the motherboard risers so you don't short the board on the back of the case. The motherboard should be slightly elevated from the mounting points on the case, so the solder points on the back of the motherboard do not contact the case and cause a short. Some newer cases have the risers built into the the mounting points, but most still have the brass riser screws.

You know... this move is going to be underwhelming going from a i7 2600K. Mainly because of your video card. Rethinking my recommendations, I think you would see a lot more for your money if you upgraded your video card to a GTX 980 (the MSI GAMING version) and maybe upgrade your RAM.

Thanks guys for responses and suggestions. I do appreciate them. See here is the thing. I have a HP. I know gasp. BUT. Believe it or not. I have been very pleased with it. I now have had it for 3 years and 5 months. Zero problems with it and had it customized to my liking when I bought it. The kickers though. Cpu is a 2600 not a 2600k. So, I cannot OC. Bios for the mobo. HP never updated them to allow me to upgrade to a 700/900 series card. These newer cards that come with UEFI support from the factory. Wont work with my mobo. Does not support full UEFI. My machine originally came with Windows 7. Even though I am using 8.1

I would absolutely love to throw in a GTX 980 and maybe upgrade the ram to 16gb as well. It only supports 1333 (10600) To do this. I would have to purchase a new mobo and possibly new case. Considering system age. That is where I was drawing the line and just don't see it as being worth it. Hence a new build. 4790k or Skylake 6770k. Apparently Zotac is one of the few a 970 or 980 might work in my machine. Says its compatible with PCI Express 1.1 on up. But, I am a big fan of EVGA. I wish they would make their newer cards non UEFI compliant as well for people like me in a crappy situation.

Well, you could just do a motherboard change. It would cost ya $85 for a budget board.

I assume your HP machine probably won't fit a non-proprietary board, so you would just need to find a new case. Even though you don't have the unlocked CPU the i7 2600 is enough to push a GTX 980. You would still get a lot more performance per dollar going that route. A change in chipset/CPU platform is going to be disappointing... especially after spending 1K on a whole new system and not upgrading the video card.

A system refresh crossed my mind. But, I just did not think it would be worth it and would be blasted for it. New mobo and case does sound better with a new video card. I could then reuse the rest of my parts. Wonder if I could use Windows 8 again as well or have to rebuy it. I bought that Windows 8 upgrade when it first came out. MS was running that promo. Only paid $15 for it. HP mobo is a micro atx board 9.6x9.6

    • Not listed. But it also comes with liquid cooling solution and allows OC in the bios. I know rare with a OEM machine. You might have noticed the video card is pretty weenie for a decent build. That was solved by ordering a EVGA 4gb GTX 960 FTW edition card. Final cost for build. $1,478.53 You could configure up to a GTX 980. But, in the end. I just did not want to spend that much. Psu is not listed either but it comes with 500w made by Delta Electronics. So good psu. The mobo is a MSI Z97 board.
