I'm trying to determine if it's an instalation problem. It's odd that it's happen with 2 different sets of memory, 2 different boards and 2 different cpus. Only thing I can see that is common is psu and cpu cooler. What are you using as a cpu cooler?

And you have used it with both mother board setups that had the same problem?

Yes I have, but I can't really see it being a problem since tons of people use it. Also, I don't have the stock cooler that came with the 980x on hand nor do I have any other coolers with me.

Alot have also had problems with the backplate. If you install it a little to tight it can cause problems.

I think I've pretty much debunked this. I must have remounted it a ton of times, at was really loose but tight enough to at least be held on. Same issues. Considering all that I've tried, I don't think bad luck with the boards was a completely busted theory. :(

If your CPU socket is fine, then you either have a defective CPU or defective mobo. If it is not fine, then you have a defective mobo. It is time to start RMAing. Just pick one and do it.

Random RMAing is a painful thing to do :P. But could a defective CPU really have these effects?

Do you really like doing what you have been doing, more than using a properly running computer? For 'Gods sake', just RMA the thing! And yes, the memory controller is in the CPU, meaning most of the traces that go to your RAM slots come directly from the CPU; yes, can be the CPU! But I would RMA the board first, that's just me, I figure there is more probability of board prob than CPU prob.

You are just going to prolong this ordeal of yours if you don't RMA one or the other. You are just 'spinning your wheels' now, not making any progress.

I made process in the sense that I can say that it's more likely a problem with a piece of hardware. Sure, this isn't "enjoyable" but losing a computer for several weeks only to wait for an RMA that might not even fix it is frustrating, maybe even more so. My goal here was to be as definitive as possible, and having not dealt with a broken CPU memory controller before, I wouldn't be able to identify it right away without some help.

What again makes no sense tho is that he has gotten 2 boards. 1 new, 1 rma. He's gotten 2 sets of memory. 1 new, 1 rma. He's also used 2 different cpus. Yet he still exhibits the same problem. What is the likelyhood of him getting 2 boards that are bad straight out of the box? My thought pointed towards something else that is common. The cooler.

What happens if you remove the backplate all together (means you have to pull boards which you have to do for rma anyway) and put the build together outside the case? Manually hold the cooler on the cpu at boot.

Yeah, you have a good point. And I did do an unnecessary RMA last Jan. But I have heard of ppls getting replacements with the same prob before.

Re:3.99GB usable 2010/06/03 04:36:19 (permalink)
Its the motherboard. I went though this problem w/a P55 system I built. I went through 3 motherboards to find one that did NOT have this problem (not all evga boards).

Let me clarify this by explaining that all the relevant parts were new or had worked previously. But the board, cpu, and ram were all new. I tried three new cpus, and 2 new sets of RAM in addition to the new boards. When it was all said and done, the symptom was always the same: only 1/2 of the installed memory would show up. That lead me to believe it has something to do with the memory slots on the board.

After I got a working motherboard, I found that ALL of the other pieces (all 3 CPUs and every possible combination of RAM) worked flawlessly.

So, RMA or exchange the board. Its the likely culprit. Ironically, I assumed it was the LEAST LIKELY in my scenario, and it spent over one week troubleshooting this problem. Learn something new EVERY time I build a system.

i7-975, 759 X58, Corsair Doms.... same problem here. The only thing I don't have on 2 WC loops is the ram so the thought of taking out the board to RMA is almost worse than living with 2 gigs missing. What I don't quite grasp is while the system displays 6GB, it recognizes it's there, only allocates 3.99 as usable. I also hate to give up my board as it's #55 of the limited edition.

New build pending....

OK it's really looking like they had a bad batch of mobo's. I have also heard of one other instance of this happening in the last month (could've been Wraith, IDK).

Fortunately, to save time I can exchange the motherboard at the place I got it for a new one to save me a ton of time avoiding the RMA process. However, if it is indeed the motherboard...I don't want to have to be buying the store out of each X58 LE until I find a good one.

so, from post#1  you mention the system wont post with one stick of memory in slot#1- no matter what stick you use. this pretty much says that slot#1 is bad, yeah? so just replace the board already, again.

i have the LE. same EXACT issue (3.99 usable). slot#1 bad. rma mobo received last week works perfect. ..and i did NOT re-install the aftermarket cooler. i suggest that you do the same thing. just open a ticket. the faster  you do that the quicker you get yer replacement.

As advised in this thread I have tryed the trl setting in memory feature included in bios74,I have set +1 and for the moment everything runs well.

Now I have no disappearing.
And original post just RMA it, yeah.
