IMO....unlocked multis take some of the "fun" out of overclocking for daily use....they don't force you to work at it the way a locked chip does. No for extreme OCing, thats a different story

Can't find any info on the QPI frequency selection. I assume it would be fine to set it to 4.8 GT/s on my i5 760?

I'm wondering that also. Those of us on the P55 FTW/FTW 200 only have the option of 4.2 and 4.8 GT/s, not 6.4 like you put in your guide.

Okay, after digging up some info about QPI frequency, this is what I've come up with. In the BIOS you have three options here - auto, 4.270 GT/s and 4.800 GT/s. 4.270 GT/s is a 16x multiplier while 4.800 GT/s is an 18x multiplier. So to determine QPI speed, use this equation. BCLK x QPI multiplier = QPI speed QPI speed should be double the effective speed of your RAM. Now let me plug in some numbers for an example. 200 MHz x 16 = 3200 MHz QPI speed Perfect for me, since I have 1600 MHz RAM.

Stupid question time, trying to decipher LLC vs. VDroop that we have in the EVGA BIOS, is the Lynnfield guide saying we should leave VDroop on (i.e. default) or turn it off? Can't believe I just found this guide but this is what I've been waiting for. Even without my new case yet, maybe I can at least more easily find a stable overclock for my current setup compared to how I was trying at random before. Still not sure about that 100C max temp being claimed for Lynnfield but whatever.

You should disable VDroop when overclocking. It just lowers VCore in windows. Not sure about LLC, I don't even recall seeing such an option in my P55 FTW. I'll have to look at it again.

vdroop is LLC it's just named differently in the EVGA BIOS. That's why I'm confused on which way to set the setting. In the guide he says to set LLC on. I'm not sure if that means vdroop enabled or disabled for us.

For us, the correct setting for LLC enabled is Vdroop Off.

dozer3000 then qpi is at 3200 MHz Correct. As I said: 4.270 GT/s = 16x multiplier 4.800 GT/s = 18x multiplier 200 MHz QPI x 16 = 3200 MHz QPI speed should be double your effective RAM speed. 1600 MHz RAM x 2 = 3200 MHz. Good settings.

with ftw and i5 750 @ 4.4 21x210.. my qpi is set on auto.. i tried the 4.270 and 4.800 settings when i built it and test it for oc.. those seemed to give me some issues with stability when testing so i left it on auto.. according to elete my qpi is 3779.5.. my memory on 2:10 is 1050/2100, i have been on these settings for about a year with no problems that i know of..

boredgunner Correct. As I said:
4.270 GT/s = 16x multiplier 4.800 GT/s = 18x multiplier
200 MHz QPI x 16 = 3200 MHz
QPI speed should be double your effective RAM speed. 1600 MHz RAM x 2 = 3200 MHz. Good settings.
boredgunner....sorry I missed your previous statement....this is not 100% accurate. There's nothing wrong with your math....only your assumption that QPI must be 2x your DRAM.....you're thinking of the uncore ratio. With Bloomfield, it's required that the uncore run at a minimum of 2x the DRAM speed....but QPI does not matter. I do talk about this on page two in the guide.

So I should be able to successfully run my QPI at 4.8 GT/s? That would be good news.

Hi I'm new to this overclocking thing. I have to say this is the most comprehensive guide I have came across. I have searched for over two weeks to find something to give me a clue on how to get my rig to at least 4ghz. After reading your guide about a zillion times , pulling my hair, and banging my head against the desk because I could not get my temps under control at stock settings. I had everything dialed in correctly but with the slightest OC, my 760 would say, "WTH" 70C right off the back. Thinking my H50 was sitting tight enuff, then I applied a lil hand pressure to the cooler and something amazing happened, the harder i pressed the more the temp dropped. I was really scarred to turn the screws more, but there is not real way to tell if your cooler is seated properly other turning each screw in a figure "x" pattern till the temps no longer drops. Now, I can follow your guide with confidence. So far idle is averaging 35c across, and loaded is about 58c. I'm taking those baby steps to get the most out of my rig. I guess this a very long winded way of me saying thanks for your expertise, it really help me to cut out all the B.S. and guesswork. I see 4ghz just over the horizon.

Love the guide, helped me finally figure out where the problem was with my random instability with just a mild 150blck with turbo/speedstep on OC. Planning on using it next to see what I can push to for a higher OC for folding use.
