Except you can RUN 4k with SLI 980s?

Couldn't post a link but I just briefly looked at avg fps from "TweakTown"on SLI 980s at 4k and they are alright. I would say yes, but for me anything below 100 fps is nothing I'm interested in.

So it must be amazing to know 980s in SLI get better performance than all 12g routinely in 4k right?

Raven are you sure about DX12 and the Vram pooling? If so the 980 Ti seems like the way to go.

VRAM pooling isn't going to happen anytime soon. Sure DX12 may support it but the game developers have to as well. Game makers aren't even making heavy use of multiple cores yet so they sure as hell aren't going to make any huge advances with VRAM anytime soon. The only developers who would even have the resources would be AAA developers.

You also need to take into account the way the market has shifted. They want to target the largest audience possible with their game (i.e. console ports) and if the steam hardware profile surveys are any indication a much larger market segment of gamers are running fairly outdated hardware.

I'm not sure I see your point? Isn't that more than a little obvious without even looking at the benchmarks? I doubt anyone here is under the impression that a single 980Ti/Titan X would beat two 980s in raw FPS and if they are then they know absolutely nothing about hardware.

The Titan X and 980Ti are far superior to the 980, of course not the >100% performance increase that you were apparently expecting but rather a more than reasonable ~30% FPS increase. VRAM usage at 4K has been shown to exceed 4GB in several games. You will therefore experience stuttering, texture loading delays and generally inconsistent performance in those games with SLI 980s regardless of the FPS. I know I'd personally prefer to spend an additional $150 per card in order to prevent those issues for at least another 8-12 months rather than experiencing them from the day the cards are delivered. If you're intending to play at 4K and are going to purchase two GPUs and a 4K monitor then I think you'd be pretty silly to buy two 980s.

OP what did you end up going for?
I'm in the same boat. however as i will be watercooling i need to factor in WC blocks and backplate costs. In the end for me atleast 2 titan x's are actully cheaper then 3 980 TI with full blocks and backplates (first world problems right)

would love to know what you went for in the end?
