Dukman It's not about how fast they shift. It's about the fact that an 8, 9 or 10 speed transmission is going to constantly shift. The gears are going to be way too close to each other to be practical. I hear it every time I go down the freeway, any throttle tip in and the vehicle changes the gear.
A dual clutch is all fine and good (if you like boring) as long as there are a reasonable amount of gears involved. A 6 speed is really the most that a gasoline powered car ever really needs. 7 is doable but overkill.
Then you don't care about performance. Plus it gets rid of the gas guzzler tax.
???? How is not wanting 10 gears or an automatic not caring about performance?
Anyway, it seems like Im the odd one out when it comes to these multiple gear automatics. Everyone else is excited about it. Okay. I'll stay over here with my antiquated 3 pedals and 5 gears.
The new close ratio X gear automatics, allow your third member to be geared for acceleration and still cruise at 80 MPH under 2500 rpm They want to keep the engine in the power-band; but, that's kind of funny as the supercharger should give it a mile wide power-band. Are the automatics race proven and tough and will they holdup to the torque - don't know But if you run 4:10 in your third member; you'd want another gear for highway cruising ? I have no idea what the gear ratio of the third member is in this 2017 toy.

You have to really want it though. $62K is still a lot of money to put down just to enjoy the performance. If they're wanting to, however, go for it! Don't get me wrong on any of this, I'll choose GM over Ford any day.

I can do that now with my 5 speed and 4.10 gears. 2500rpm is actually kind of high. Which is why I am looking for a 6 speed out of a GT500. A taller overdrive while in 6th allowing for freeway cruising at sub 2000 rpm's. But I dont need 4 extra gears to keep me in the power band. A proper 3rd and 4th gear spacing will do that easily. But I concede. I don't like them and see that many gears in a light duty vehicle as superfluous. Everybody else does like them.. We'll wait and see how they feel about it after owning it for awhile. I would imagine the ZL1 probably ships with something like 3.31's in it. Both to make it more driver friendly and to hedge that gas guzzler thing.

Besides heel & toe is too hard for most to master I'd take the 6-speed --- except rush hour on the east coast = bumper to bumper - start -n- stop for 1 to 2 hrs each way in some of the bigger cities You could walk faster during rush hour: DC, Baltimore, Philly Locally: The lemmings make a run for the beach every weekend, peak travel time the backups are measured in miles

Its hard to believe the prices of new cars these days. When I was a kid you could get a very nice ride for under 10,000 dollars. When I was a kid cars had points, no fuel injection and no catalytic converter and gas was 50 cents a gallon. LOL

+1 Your OLD We would put Shell super in the mower for about 50 cents a gallon Even then, the fast cars cost about 1 years salary for a white-collar worker --- so it really has not changed that much. Just decades of inflation. Though in the last 10 years cars have outpaced inflation by a lot.

You all complaining about the price do not understand the category this car sits in. This is a high performance sports car, not a Chevy Cruz. Look at the cost of my Porsche Boxster new 13 years ago. Yeah that's $61,070 on the sticker. The 2017 ZL1 will wipe my Boxster and probably any car in it's price range in every performance category. 13 years later just barley $1,000 more. It's a bargain!

Man I love competition. Been following this story on a few other sites. The only downside to this car is the veeeeeeeeeery long on the tooth body style. We truly live in the best ever time to own a car people! The 60's & 70'S have officially lost their title. Just wait and see how Dodge responds and the all new Mustang in 2020... Leapfrogging at its best!

The cars today, yeah they have more HP and are faster from the factory, they handle better too. But the cars in the 50s 60s and into the 70s sure the heck looked a whole lot better. I would take a 42 Willys with a 427 and a big ole chrome blower on top over anything they make today.

bah, american garbage made by rednecks on the auto unions. is it still full of cheap chinese plastics on the interior? it is a performance bargain, i truly don't think anything touches the vette, camaro, charger/challenger and mustangs when it comes to horsepower for your buck. but boy do they lack on fit and finish and interior/exterior design. had a cadillac cts fully loaded as a rental while my car was on the shop. Cadillac has really stepped it up both inside and out and the base 306hp V6 had plenty of power. i was impressed at how much cadillac has improved over the years. but mustangs, camaros and even vettes all feel so cheaply made. i'd take a 70s nova or chevelle over any of these full of cheap plastic cars. it may have 650hp, but it's still a chevy. hell i can make a honda civic beat that camaro on a 1/4 mile for far less, but at the end of the day it's still a civic. so for $60k, my money would be on a C43 AMG fully loaded, or C63 base with some miles (starts at $70k), Audi S5, M3, M4 with some miles, Lexus RC-F, Is-F. They all provide adequate performance, but offer so much better ride confort, refinements, technology. Solely for looks, i'd do jaguar F-type. My 02 cents

Cadillac is the only credible luxury car manufacturer in the US. Everything else is a flimsy pile of excrement. Some have a lot of power and can go fast, sure. But they are ugly as sin. The Camaro is no exception. Many alternatives have all of the above. And what in holy frozen over hell happened to the Corvette? Who thought this latest, vulgar iteration was a good looking car? And nitwits actually buy it...Jesus. If you have enough money for a Corvette, you probably have enough money to buy something else. But you chose the Corvette...Brilliant.

panzlock Cadillac is the only credible luxury car manufacturer in the US. Everything else is a flimsy pile of excrement. Some have a lot of power and can go fast, sure. But they are ugly as sin. The Camaro is no exception. Many alternatives have all of the above.
Whoa now. I feel like Dodge nailed it with the challenger as far as the retro muscle car look goes.

...Thank you for putting me in my place. That is a nice looking American muscle car which I overlooked. The car looks modest yet sharp. It was not overdone. I would definitely buy a Challenger if it weren't a Chrysler. The Mustang is a close second. But I must point out again, the true American supercar, the Corvette, which comes with both a performance package and a decent price tag...is an abomination.
