Signed up and added a little gift to the list too. Maybe it will hurt folding rather than help, but we all need a gaming break sometime.

I would like to get in on this, but I'm not sure where to start, nor what number my baseline points would be. Anyone able to help me out or point me to a FAQ?

Your basline points could be your current daily average.  It is what you expect to fold on average daily during the contest period.

ok so I am completely lost as to my PPD calculation. I thought 1400 points was off for an over night fold but now I have no idea how to calculate it.

In Jan. you averaged about 2000 ppd. In Feb you are averaging about 1500 ppd. Go with something in that range. It's just a guesstimate anyway. Don't lose sleep over it.

Did you not notice my hourly protection on 2/16 at 3am slot? shows 14,500 points. Thats why I am confused, and how can I put 1500 ppd when I can get 14500 points sometimes?

well just got the q6600 working with a pos ide drive. Going to install the drivers to it and what not later though, watching some movies for now. I might set up an even older petium but not sure if it would even fold. Plus I dont have another mic and keyboard for that set up.

My guess is that it's a high value multi-day work unit, you may get 14k ish all at once, but that work unit could have taken 8-10 days to finish.

You probably had a 762x project work unit which took days to complete and Stanford can only credit you 14,500 points at the time they are returned.  So, a rough average of your points over the last few days, including the zero days, where your GPU was plugging away but not ready to return, will suffice for this contest.  We are going to make make mistakes, which I did, still anticipating said project to still be coming my way and give better results.  But that streak seems to have ended leaving me with a ~20% overestimate.  Ultimately, our misestimates should balance out and our teams picked based on them will be relatively fair.

What can you do with several pieces of scrap aluminum, access to a metal worker and some free time?

You likely got a 762x WU esC, I'll get fast WUs that are done in 3 - 4 hours then I'll get one of those 762x's that take 20 hours. I've only got the one GPU folding.
I guestimated 13,500 for my PPD, it's in between and just incase i get the occasional 762x cause they're out there they just don't come along as often as they were.

Well Shy out for a few hours. My net is going to be changed, hopefully my ISP is nice and does it smoothly, likely gonna happen today.

I've only started folding on my new setup for about a day and a half, so I haven't the foggiest as to what my average PPD is. But in a day or two I'll be sure to sign up and I'll throw in a prize donation as well!

Can you even fold on IDE hard drives and windows XP? I should have asked this before anything since my previous 24/7 folder was on win7 and no longer available to me which was stupid. I should have kept that amd athlon ii 635. Not a beast but a lot better then what I got now for my spare rig/s. Also can a Pentium type chip with say a 8800 ultra or 7800 fold at all or would that be wasting my time to put together?

I needa get back another 24/7 rig. Just hard to right now. Heck if I had a quad core 775 chip I think that would do some decent work.

And I keep getting what I have, the Intel e6600 confused with the q6600. Is it possible to unlock 2 more cores on an e6600?

Yes.  I've done it with an old laptop before (Pentium 4 HT Northwood) with a 20GB PATA hard disk (the other word for IDE).  No performance loss noted.

Second major question I can answer: No, it is not possible to unlock 2 more cores on an E6600.  I own one myself, it's not possible.  A Q6600 is a pair of E6600's stuck together by Intel and hiding under the heatspreader.  An E6600 is just a nice dual core.

Third question I know:  You can fold the 8800 Ultra, but you can't fold the 7800.  8000 series and up support CUDA, but the 7000 series was before that time.

Thanks. Kind bummer but will do. I kind of regret ever selling my amd athlon II x4 635. It may have been slow but I know it probably folds better then this e6600. What could I use on the motherboard of this e6600? I am assuming it is a 775 socket board so if I were able to get my hands on like a q6600 I would be straight.

Does anyone maybe have some spare parts for a 775 build that you can either hook me up with or loan me for the month of march? Trying to get a quad core folding for this madness march comp. Even some older amd parts if you have a decent quad core cpu and motherboard.

It is a 775 socket.  Guaranteed a Q6600 would work, depending on chipset you might be able to use the 45nm Q8000 or Q9000 series parts.  Sadly, I don't have any high speed 775 parts I can loan out.  If I did, I'd spare ya a chip, but the one I do have is set aside for a particular project.  Only other thing I've got is an E6600 and a few Pentium 4 HT's.

Though, if you ever need help OCing a 775 socket chip, I'll be more than willing to help, what little I still remember.

  • Please consider captaining a team this contest.
    • We still need at least one new team to replace the Ins@nity F@Holders.
    • tanner2 is unable to manage the Fanatical Folders due to outside obligations, and it would be great if someone would able to fill in for him this year.  Alternatively, you can create your own team to replace the FF's.
    • We're still waiting on rjbelans...

if anyone has an extra 920 or better laying around I could put it to use for march. Have an extra rig with no processor x58 sli setup that could go to use.

Well I'm currently finishing up my tasks that I have been crunching on my main computer. Once that's done i'll resume folding on it to get an accurate folding average for you so I can sign up. I have never participated in this contest before. How long does it go for? Maybe I overlooked it in this forum thread. Anyhow looking forward getting back to folding full time again. Only had my second computer (Dedicated folder) folding for awhile now since I have gotten back to Crunching more. Good luck everyone and I look forward to the competition!
