So a buddy of mine gave me a Supermicro X7DVL-E 1u server.  Quite dated server from what I work with normally.  Along with that he gave me two additional processors.  These were L5420's but noticed both had different steppings.  Does anyone know of a registry change that could be made to force Windows Server 2012R2 see all 8 cores?  If I have to I will purchase another L5420 with a matching processor stepping which isn't going to break the bank. Wanted to ask you all.

Thanks

From what I understand, stepping must be the same... Core speeds the same..
I generally use matched cpu's, that way no issues ...

Any more details on the system?? can help with more info..

    Cheers

I'm pretty sure they to have the same stepping or windows will just blue screen on you no matter what you do.

Both L5420's show under device manager but in task manager only one.  Hyper-V manager shows also only 1 proc.

If you could get it to work what would you use it for?  I used 3 2600K's and w3570 when the big wu's were allowed on 8 threads but Stanford got rid of all of that even for 32P rigs.  It's all smp now for CPU folding.

    I used a E5645 with a E5620, a 6 core and a 4 core and it worked. 10 cores 20 threads.
I am surprised you're having problems with just stepping.
    It was an Asus board.
I do have a couple dual Supermicro 1366 boards with x5560s in them.
If I get a chance I'll drop in a x5660 and see what happens.

With my AMD 4P servers I had Opteron 6166HE in with my 6172 when I upgraded I missed the one CPU.
When all were doing one WU like folding they ran at the slower speed of the 6166.
When running WCG one WU per core they ran at their rated speed, 6172 ran faster than the 6166HE.
I cought my mistake when folding, the WUs were taking the same time to complete after I upgraded.

Maybe running Linux made them work better together than Windows can.

They all work in Linux no problem.  I was trying to set up my vm's under hyper-v under Windows Server 2012 R2 when I first noticed the issue.  Vmware is no different.

Got it figured out.  How even after reformatting, a rouge hal.dll file was stuck on the HDD is past me.  Found it using windirstat and now fixed.  Both sockets working after deleting that hal.dll file and running a windows repair.  Thank god this nightmare is fixed.  4 damn days of fighting with it.
