"i am wondering what exactly should i change to not degrade the card via overclocking" This is up to you.
Are you running k-boost all the time or only when gaming?

My card boosts exactly the same.  I have found a +250 core and + 250 memory works incredibly well with the card if and when I overclock.  Most times, I run stock speed & MSI Afterburner with a fan curve as follows:  40C-45 % fan; 50C-55% fan; 60C-70% fan; 70C-80% fan and then upward.  My fans are absolutely quiet...no coil whine. I think that these cards are cherry!  The card rarely goes over 71C, hits 73C when overclocked.  Mostly, I use the power target of 110% so the card stays pretty steadily at 1911.  It will jump as low as 1860 and back up to 1911 at stock speeds.  I think you are pretty safe as long as you keep the card cool.
