Hi Guys

So I have been seeing plenty of posts saying that i7 2600 can't bottleneck the 980ti with various test results as a proof.  Last nite I upgraded from 780ti SC to 980ti Classy, to my surprise firestrike scores went up from 11k to 14500.  2K less than expected.  With overclock of 100mhz and 400 on memory I managed to get it slightly past 15k which I find pretty damn pitiful...
I am sporting an i7 2600 running @ 4.4ghz and Asus sabertooth z77 mobo.

Give it to me straight - am I gonna have to upgrade to Skylake?  Has my beloved 2600 has seen the end of the line?

Yes 2600 will hold you back. 3770k is the minimum and even then will be a small bottleneck. I was slightly bottlenecking with my 4770k plx chip board but changed to x99 and 5820k with no plx chips and opened up my score an additional 4k in FS.

I have a 2600k too. Does this translate to fps in games too or just benching?

What is your graphics score? If it is above 20k you are fine. A 2600k can play today's games just fine. Going after 3dmark combined scores is nonsensical.

That is not true, no bottleneck with i7 processors and single graphic card.
Only what will happen is that Physics score will grow for few hundred points on every generation.
But because all generations have different clock sometimes older generation with higher clock overclocked is better than new.
But graphics score will stay same. If you want all scores to go up you need to change every single processor and every graphic card... Combination of that two will give best score... But if someone want to pay attention only on graphic power because i7 processor work on 30% in new games and graphic score stay same. From moment when some graphic cards give 1000 points lower Graphics Score than customers should think what to do with processor.
In every new game on higher resolution and high end graphic cards processor sometimes work 20-25% and you will get nothing if you buy 7% stronger of them. And only graphic card work 99%.

Why would it end up with 14.5k in Firestrike if any review on a (3rd/4th gen) i7 ends up with minimum of 16.5k?

Where is 16.500? With overclocked graphic card on 1300MHz...?
Kitguru have 15.100 with i7-4790K and 980Ti SC...
17.500 is score for i7-5960X and 980Ti Strix... i7-5960X have 20MB Cache and 16 threads compare to 8MB and 8 threads.

I advice you to overclock i7-2600K on 4.5GHz if it's possible and to leave graphic card on stock and to tell us Graphic Results.
Main result you don't need to look, usually now you will find tests with i7-4790K or even i7-5930K and similar... And they help lot with main score compare to your processors.

    Look i7-4790K + GTX980Ti Classified 15.500 score.

500-600-700 points difference is because difference between i7-2600K and i7-4790K...
But I think Graphic Score is similar.

Well overclockers review has 15.5k stock 16.5k overclock.  I have found a few more reviews of 890ti with 100-200mhz OC trying to guess the results of a Classy.  Stock 980ti card with 200mhz OC has speed of stock Classy - that was my logic as there are very few reviews of EVGA Classy.
I saw OC scores of single classified cards going ranging from 17k to 19K on Google (lack of other sources)
I honestly have no clue what I should be getting at stock speed on a Classy but seeing all the high scores made me feel a bit like a ginger stepchild ;-)

EDIT: In the meantime you have posted the same pic from Overclockers.  Also I own a 2600 - non K version so my overclocks are very limited and already pushed to the limit.

You should need to tell Graphics Scores, that's under with little fonts.

Seems right to me. Overclock the card and if you hit about 20k you should be fine.
Also you may be running PCI e 8x or 2.0 or both which is another 300-500 points lower graphics score than any bench you will see.

So what I'm hearing is don't upgrade to Skylake... (Again, I only game, don't bench, and have an OC'd 2600k)

I didn't doubt at all 980Ti Classified score on any normal processor should be around
19.000, but over 19.000 and even with i7-5960X score will not be 20.000 except if graphic sample is extremely nice.
And games only see that, Processor will work with 20-30% only graphic will work with full power and your graphic card is normal, with expected result. Enjoy in gaming.

Thanks for your feedback - very informative throughout.  I am glad I could find out my scores are actually "normal" as I wasn't that interested in doing an upgrade quite yet - really happy with my good old 2600 ;-)

You can easy to save money now when DDR4 is on table. Before i7-2600K completely lose value.
If you sell your platform and cover motherboard price than you will need to pay processor and memory...
You can read what will happen with Skylake, maybe Intel plan to launch i7-6790K for few months... that would be nice upgrade.

Your 2600 is a bottleneck because it's only running PCI-e gen.2. The 2600 is not capable of gen.3 even if you have a gen.3 board. That isn't to say it's a bad setup, just that it's a cpu bottleneck.

I'm also only getting 14k with Classified on a I5 3570k @4.6Mhz with an MSI Z77 MPower MB, so Z170 or X99? Only play games and want to run single card.
