Decided after getting some good feedback to modify the blackout and add RBG LED strips instead of the 2 x 3mm LEDs to give a more even light across the acrylic, instead of just 2 bright spots.

Even without adding the carbon fiber vinyl, this is looking pretty sweet.

I personally think it looks even better this way, and the glow around the edge matches what I am trying to achieve with my case in this build.  Now that I have RGB LEDs Installed, I can also tweak things to make sure I have a uniform color throughout the entire build (which I have not done yet).

So, the initial post asked if the 1070 ACX is compatible with reference blocks - has this been determined?

Definitely, plus with the RGB LED strips you can tone down the brightness levels even more if you want just a sublet "glow". Glad I went that direction, and I plan to do the same now with my EK CPU waterblock.

ModMyMods is accepting pre-orders for the AquaCompter Kryographics 1080 Waterblocks. They state they are also compatible with the 1070 reference design cards.  There is even an installation video that is for both the 1080 & 1070 on the product page.

XSPC stated that their 1080 block and backplate will be cheaper than the 980.  So, it should be about $150-160 for the block and backplate.

I think it is interesting that so many have posted here and elsewhere that they would go with a different card vs. water block. The water block is an accessory to facilitate the base product which you normally think of as being the driver for all other accessories. This is the equivalent of choosing a different car because a certain brand wheels don't fit. Maybe this was a bit more relevant awhile ago when EK was the only quality player, but now there are a number of manufacturers out there delivering a good product.
