Rebuilding my system and need some advice on spacing and heat. Can I run two 1080 Classified in SLI with a Titan SC as PhysX plus audio card all with 0 spacing.  My motherboard is an EVGA X79 Dark.  In theory there is enough spacing but not sure if this will generate too much heat? I want to keep the HT Omega eClario because it has 7.1 surround channels. Normally I buy the blower style cards so not familiar with the ACX 3.0 fans. Using a Caselabs Magnum 8A which has very generous space inside.

Having the ACX cards sandwiched together with no open slot in between may cause a temp problem, but if you really want to know for sure, set it up how you want and do some testing.

You dont need physx cards these days, the gpus are fast enough to handle everything to be thrown at :)

People have been claiming that for years with every new generation of GPU's that come out.  Every new gen GPU I buy, I always test with the previous gen's GPU I have as a PhysX card.  And every game I play that uses PhysX ( ie, Batman series) always benefits from a dedicated PhysX card.

I also like connecting my additional monitors & TV to my PhysX card leaving my main GPU for my main display only.

I see water cooling in your future with ACX coolers.

Rig 1 in my signature started with all 3 GPUs using stock blower fans and it was hard to keep them cool even with aftermarket case fans on 100% RPM

ACX fans direct a lot of heat back into the case and very little out the back of the cards.  My EVGA 980 SC ACX 2-way SLI cards would seriously heat up my Corsair 760T case - no fan in the side panel because it is a window and had CPU AIO rad in the top

My 10 series cards liked to perform best at 50 C or colder.  Otherwise they started stepping down in speed.

I am pushing them hard Folding 100% 24/7 and on water since November and keeping them cool and fast.

Yeah, sandwiching three cards, two of which are ACX, together and expecting them to run cool is a sure sign of insanity!

They will run quite hot.

Too hot!! I've been there with many different 1080s in sli and slot cooler best but still too hot for my liking even with 1 slot spacing.

Ac3 cooler with 1 slot is also too hot with classified 1080s.

You need water cooling for sli like I've done but at the same time there's like nothing that works with sli currently with the newer games!! Sli is like a lost cause atm and a waste of money.

If i had to do it all again it would be either a single 1080 or titan xp.

Also if you already own the 1080 classifieds the old ek 780ti classified water block will fit the classified 1080!

Merry Christmas everyone. Thank you for your kind advice.  Just realized that if I use PCI 2 it drops to only 8x.  So I will use PCI 1 and PCI 3 with 1 slot spacing. Sent back the HB bridge and ordered a EVGA PRO SLI BRIDGE HB (1 Slot Spacing) Model 100-2W-0026-LR.

Looks like I have to drop either the audio or phys x card.  Headphones are Razer Tiamat Over Ear 7.1 Surround Sound PC Gaming Headset. Do most people use a sound card or is the onboard sound pretty good?

In that case, why not do this:

Slot 3 (asuming a 40 lane CPU) is a x8 slot no matter what.  So how about your SLI'd GPU's in slots 1 & 4 which would be x16/x8 if you put your sound card in slot 3.  Then put your PhysX card in slot 6 for x8.  This way you'll still have your 1 slot spacing, but using everything you wanted to.

As far as the onboard audio, I think it's pretty decent.  Some who are more into a real high quality sound may prefer a good sound card, but it works well enough for me.

Merry Christmas to you as well...

When this board came out the X79 platform was a very long in the tooth.  I think they redesigned the PCI-E lanes.
http://www.evga.com/articles/00758/#X79Dark

PCI-E Lane Distribution
PE1 – x16 (x8 if PE2 used)
PE2 – x8
PE3 – x16 (x8 if PE4 used)
PE4 – x8
PE5 – x4
PE6 – x8 (x4 if PE5 used)

Will probably try the PhysX route and ditch the audio card and see how it is.

Sorry about that bud.  For some reason I had it in my head you were running a X99 board.  Although the slot spacing looks the same on the Dark compared to the X99 Classified.  It's just slot speeds are a bit different on a couple of the slots...

Let us know how it goes...

I really like my Dark board though.  It's still in use today.

I use a USB sound card. The $60 Creative Soundblaster X-Fi 5.1 Pro USB - and it can actually REALLY drive my headphones unlike the on board sound of my X79 Dark or my X99 Classified.

Looks like it's on sale for $45, and the newer model is $50. Been running the original version since 2011!
