As previously mentioned in this thread, there is an issue with the ACX fans that is being largely ignored by EVGA.  The fans will spike, anywhere from 500-2k RPM at various loads and temperatures.

I have tested 6 different cards on two different power supplies/motherboards and the issue persists.  The two sample images below show the behavior with the default fan curve and with the fan set to 100%.  The magnitude of the spikes increase as the base fan speed increases.

Before I start RMAing or opting for a different model can someone at least comment officially if this is something that needs to be directly addressed by Nvidia in a driver update, like the FE fix, or if this is a fault with the ACX cooler that can be fixed with a BIOS update?

I cant see how this can be something NVdia can fix in a driver. The input to the fan (percent curve) looks steady and the fan speed output looks wierd, so as a electronic engineer I can only conclude something most be wrong with the ACX cooler.

You said you've tried the cards on two different motherboards: was it a separate machine with its own OS/driver installation, or did you swap boards and use the same system?

For the record, I ran my 1080 SC on air for around two months before putting an EK block on it, and I never had anything like the fan wierdness you're seeing. The fan speed tracked the fan curve very smoothly. The fact that you've tried six different cards in your machine and saw it (with all six?) means either there's a whole batch of cards out there with fan trouble, or there's something about your machine that's driving this.

Also, the second image shows spikes up to 6k RPM. I doubt the fans can actually spin that fast, but I could be wrong.

The Founders Edition cards had the same issue and it was fixed with a driver update back in June.  I don't know if it has the same specific cause, but the symptoms are very similar.

The cards were tested on two completely separate machines with clean bench installs, in addition to the other person who posted about it a week ago that has different components.

Yeah I wouldn't think that the fans could hit over 5k, but they're definitely spiking in between with audible differences.  And I just did another round of general gameplay testing on the two newest cards with the same results.

Good luck, I hope a driver update fixes it. I should be getting my 1080 SC pretty soon. Hopefully it's not a widespread issue.

    Hi Dr.Doofy,

I am sorry to see that your card is not working as it should.  I assure you that this is not a issue with the ACX fans and just simply a problem with your product and we are here to help.  Please call or email us at your convenience so that we may work with you to have your product exchanged.

Support told me last week to get replacements through the vendor, Amazon in this case, since it has been less than 30 days. The Amazon replacements I have received exhibit the issue as well, 6 in total (so far). Perhaps there was just a bad batch sent to Amazon.

I will try one replacement from EVGA direct and go from there.

Brief follow-up to this issue, in case it happens to anyone else, all six cards were in fact faulty and required RMA/replacements.  There was apparently a batch of cards, sourced through Amazon in my case, that had this particular fan issue.

I have the same problem, I am in touch with EVGA support, hopefully there might be a solution via a VBIOS update or something

Did you finally found a good unit without this problem?

Having this same problem with a set of 1080 SC cards. RMA is the only option here?

RMA seems to be the way most of us are going. I am hearing that some people are having success when they install a hybrid kit, but I can't verify that for sure.

I was hearing the fan speed changes during gaming so I tested mine with GPU-Z using the render test to stress the card.  Guess what? My Step-up GTX 1080 GAMING ACX 3.0 has the same problem described in this thread.  I submitted my data to EVGA support and am now happily waiting on my replacement card.  No fuss no muss, EVGA is still the best, period.

    PS.
This is NOT a driver issue.  I tried two different versions of the driver being sure to scour the system in safe mode using DDU after each, no change.  The problem is with the card, I just hope the replacement works as it should.  I don't like taking my system apart to install / de-install cards as this can lead to problems caused by dust migration into connectors, connectors becoming loose, accidental ESD, etc...

Buddy of mine has had 3 in a row with the same issue, They are now sending him a 4th.

I am sure he will eventually comment on his experience with the issue.

That's the problem with the SC/FTW's their on custom PCB's by the vendor. Fan controller could be bad on PCB. Glad I bought a reference design card, I've had 0 issues with mine.

Just received my new RMA for this very issue and it does the exact same thing.  I will have to live it since EVGA clearly has an issue here they need to work on and I don't want to go through another RMA.

Same issue here with three cards in a row.  I have never bought anything other than an evga nvidia gpu but guess I am about to.
I love evga and their customer support but if they cannot make a card that runs correctly...

EVGA is looking into this issue. They've stopped RMAs on 1080s with fan speed fluctuation problems until they figure something out.

It's hopefully something wrong that can be fixed with a VBIOS update.

How do I test for this to see if my 1080 FTWs have this issue?

I run Precision XOC and monitor my fan speed percentage. I run an aggressive curve and I've never seen any spikes.

look at the fan tachometer portion of the graph, or have your rpm show up in the osd, look for spikes there, i have consistent fan speed percentage, but my rpm spikes from 1K to #K alot for no reason like many people with this problem

Thanks, I didn't realized the OSD had the tachometer until you mentioned it. I monitored it while playing BF1 and my RPMs do not spike at all. Whew...

Just to be sure, you might want to test some other games with it. If you have the witcher 3 i would recommend using that as it certainly makes the issue apparent. My 1080 does not see nearly as much load in BF1 as it does in TW3

I have the same issues. My fan is constantly going up and down - the sound is terribly annoying. I also have these huge spikes that show up in EVGA XOC monitoring - up to 6k, which can´t be.
I am not exchanging the card for now, but the sound is so terribly annoying....

Having the same revving issue and not sending the card back since 99% of all replacements have the same issue. Hoping a BIOS update will resolve it. I traded in a perfect 980 Ti Classy for this :/ Really disappointing. Precision makes the issue worse, keep that in mind guys ;)

Same here, I trade in my perfectly working Classy 980Ti for it. I am disappointed on 2 levels - the terrible build quality of the 1080: this card has so many issues I never had with any previous card. Revving Fans, using PXOC is impossible because it makes it A LOT worse. Then the damn limited supply....it took me months to get the cards because it basically sold out everywhere all the time. And the icing on the cake being the fact that it is a lousy 6% faster than my classy @ 1580mhz was. Should have kept the classy....

I installed a waterblock....at least the damn fans won´t annoy me any longer. But this is a huge issue and I find the lack of information from EVGA concerning. This and the overheating VRMs....

Seems I'm having the same issues on mine as well. I didn't even notice it until I installed the vBios update for the VRM overheating issue, which seems to have made the issue much worse. I thought it was the vBios update that caused the issue in the first place because before the card was really quiet and now it sounds like a vacuum cleaner when under load. I bought mine from Newegg around 3 weeks ago.
