So I can't find a straight answer. Is the 1070 SC gaming affected by this whole vrm/vram issue? Is the card going to catch fire?

My understanding is no. The vrm issue comes down to a hotspot on the ftw PCB that is not there on the reference PCB used by the SC versions.

Does the vrm get hot? Yes. Some recordings up to 96c, much more hot than some competitors. With appropriate ventilation and fan speed, will this ever become an issue?

I haven't had a single issue with my 1070, but I also keep an aggressive fan to keep my Temps under 60c at all times. What is the verdict?

The only real fix the the thermal pad fix provided by EVGA. The bios fix is insufficient as it only increases the fan speeds.

And the folks that tested with that increased fanspeed VBIOS, and without the thermal pads, and found the back of the card hitting at most 83C means that it is ineffective?

No, no... that actually means that it is VERY effective for any non-FTW card (the FTWs being the models with the SERIOUS problem that brought about this poo storm).

I usually keep my cards fans around 80% (the new 90), so I think without the FTW 'hotspot', sufficient cooling should be enough. I have a warrantee to fall back on if need be, but the card has been great so far.

I think the main factor is the backplate.

I think the backplates without proper thermal pads are ovens that trap heat.

Once you have thermal pads thransfer the heat to the backplate, then it's a spreader.

My 83 degree card has no backplate BTW.

The 1070 SC is susceptible to the same issue, not just the FTW card. Start googling.

    Request a thermal pad.
