Residents there told not to drink the water due to high level of toxins from algae in Lake Erie.

Talking about water, I hope here in California we get some rain soon. This drought has Californians really nervous. We need to take our showers every day, and of course wash our cars.

Here too. Just a few minutes ago I went out to empty the trash, and I felt some light drops. I have a feeling though, it's not going to be much.

30% chance of Thunder Storm here in Los Angeles for later today.... Sounds low, But still gives hope... Not much because the day after it'll be hot and humid AGAIN.

Luckily here in the Netherlands the drinking water is some of the best in the world and without any additives or chemicals.

because you guys have awesome natural springs and land that is unmolested. These major cities here in the US just develope land and put living comforts second.

I live in the area of the jersey shore that was nailed by huricane Sandy. I work on the coastline everyday. EVERYWHERE along the coast was rocked and the dunes wiped out by the water except a few areas. The ONLY areas that made it out with dunes still intact was the natural dunes that were never touched by man. Tells you something.

It was light rain most of the day today. The only down side is that it was, and still is really humid. Very high humidity in fact where I'm at.

The water issue has been deemed 'safe' as of today for us...  only problem is that this algae bloom season has basically just started around here through the summer months and we will very well be in trouble again.

Local govt. officials are discussing/ determining how to get it under control.

I can tell you, it was a cluster-fudge around here on the weekend - not only could you not drink our water, you couldn't wash your dishes, nor make/ cook your food using it. Which in turn, most all the restaurants serving 500,000 people had to shut down in the City also ( because they couldn't clean their silverware, dishes,..etc.... either )

Water was truck-loaded in from neighboring cities, National Guard was called in to assist , there were constant updates of where to get/ or buy water.  --
--and YES, the unconscionable occurred - plenty of stores jacked their water up to insane prices to take advantage of it  ( reports of upwards of $30 / case for water were common )

Didn't realize you were a Toledo guy.  I was in Port Clinton when this all went down. Interesting to watch it all unfold.

I think one issue is that there is no requirement to actually test for cyanotoxins as they are only listed on the "candidate contaminate list".

A facility could be fully compliant with the SDWA and honestly state the water is safe... without actually checking for these algae toxins.  (that said, I think most of the places pulling water from the great lakes are testing voluntarily  but I am not 100%).

also Toledos location on the lake has a tenancy to concentrate and retain more of the algae is seems.

No, But the top image is how it's supposed to be (How it was before we hit a drought) and the bottom one is how it looks now. (Not sure of the rate, But it's extremely recent).

They did however say that the 2nd image is what losing 63 trillion gallons of water throughout the drought looks like.

So second one is probably an artists rendering? Or are both images real?
